Four masts, a landfill and a quarry Residents of Hackettstown. Co. Carlow are unhappy about the erection of a massive phone mast in the centre of the town last Sunday, about which they say no notification was received. Carlow County Council says planning permission for the mast was granted in December 2007. (Carlow Nationalist 31/7/09, p. 2).
Over 150 objections have been lodged against a proposed Hutchinson 3G (H3G) 36 metre mast at Ballinamult, Co. Waterford. The Eagle Hill Mast Committee claims a 10 metre mast would suffice to provide broadband coverage and H3G wish to build a larger mast for its mobile phone network, while also noting ‘no-one knows what the long-term effects [of non-ionising radiation] will be.’ (Dungarvan Leader 31/7/09, pp. 1.8).
Glenbeigh Residents Against Hazards, which is fighting against two H3G masts near Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry, intends protesting at the company’s offices in Dublin. The group has also joined the Irish Alliance for Radiation Protection. (Kerry’s Eye 30/7/09, p. 4).
Telefonica 02 Ireland Ltd. has withdrawn an application to extend the height of a telemast at the garda station in Granard, Co. Longford, about which local residents had voiced concern. (Longford Leader 31/7/09, p. 5).
South Tipperary County Council has ordered Tipperary Mini-Mix Ltd. to remove all waste dumped illegally at a sandpit the company operates at Tullamain, Fethard, Co. Tipperary. (Clonmel Nationalist 30/7/09, p. 2).
Wicklow County Council has granted planning permission to the O’Reilly Brothers to expand their operations at the Ballylusk Quarry, despite the fact that the Council still has enforcement proceedings against the owners before the courts and that the quarry was found to be operating without planning permission. (Wicklow People 29/7/09, p. 5).
