Thanks for the words of encouragement, we hope to do justice to Bob Doyle and what he stood for.

Dinny Barry was an OC from Cork who died on hungerstrike here in Newbridge in 1923. There is not much about him and others as it was so long ago but there is a little bit of info about him and the hunger strike (below) if your interested.

Bob Doyle was a coummuist and a member of the Connolly Association in London,Eugene McCartan is currently the general secretary of the Communist Party of Ireland, why is he been but down as a book seller,do you not want to mix with commuist,if so do not call your cummon after Bob Doyle

Eugene McCartan is not speaking on behalf of CPOI on the night so that's why Connolly Books is down. Bob Doyle was also in the IRA as I'm sure you know, it's where he gained his training that he would later use in Spain fighting fascists after fighting the fascist blue shirts here. As I'm also sure you know plenty of republicans were and are still communists, no harm in that is there?

Thanks for the interest

Kildare SF- did I read this correctly, "many republicans were communists and still are". If Irish republicanism believes in the message of the 1916 prolamation then I would be of the opinion that a communist would not endorse the same message. However, Sinn Fein are now unionist republicans so perhaps there were communist republicans. Pearse and the lads must have forgotton to include Marx it their historic document.

Bob Doyle wasn't in the IRA , he was recruited into Republican Congress by Kit Conway. Doyle would have been supporting the Cook's strikers after he became a republican and a communist, but was actually a bit of a St Paul character in reverse according to his autobiography . Before meeting up with Conway , Bob was a blueshirt and a fervent catholic .

Redundant Republican thinks there were no marxists at t.he GPO in 1916 , but James Connolly was a marxist . So were the Lemass brothers at the time . A jewish member of the IWW from the East End of London called Allen -now buried in Dublin's jewish graveyard - was a marxist/anarchist , came over to join the rising and died in a bayonet charge . The founder of the New Zealand Communist Party whose name I don't remember was at the rising and was interned in Wales before sailing to New Zealand

Thank you Mick. James Connolly was many things to many people. Maybe more a socialist than any other ism. One thing for sure, like Bobby Sands, their sacrifice has been abused and desicrated by so many. Bob Doyle - any relation to Johhy Doyle, Kildare GAA hero. Maybe they should call the cumann after him, might get a few votes for SF.

If Bob Doyle was alive today he would have no prob if Sinn Fein named a cumann after him .Bob would not be a Sinn Fein member but work with them.

Donnchadha De Barra is the name on the bronze plaque on Barry's grave in the Republican Plot in St. Finbarr's Cemetery. It is one of the three raised graves at the front of the plot - the others been Terence McSwiney (Toirdbhealac Mac Suibhne) and Tomás Mac Curtain.

Looking forward to it but have a few questions. Why have the Communist party of Ireland secretary speaking?I know he is there as a Connolly bookshop guy but thats just a front, like saying the SF Bookshop doesnt promote Sinn Fein.
I have no problem with the guy myself jsut thought for a new Cumman in a very FG/FF town that a bit more pragmatism would be better.Mary Lou is a great speaker to have as a national face and a person who attracts non traditional S.F. voters.Just my tuppence worth

Sinn Fein are not Communis, they have a problem with it and commuis have a problem with Sinn Fein, Eugene sould not go to this meeting, and Bob Doyle name sould be left out of it.

Great name and all the best in Kildare, god knows politics needs a major shake up in the county.

author by Harrypublication date Thu Aug 13, 2009 14:36author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Eugene is speaking about Bob Doyle because he along with Harry Owens are experts on his life and also knew him. He is not speaking on behalf of CPOI so felt it wasn't need to put it on the poster. It should be a good night all round and the speakers should be very interesting and the music will be top quality.

Glad people are interested, hopefully some of you will head down.
