A quarry, two incinerators, a landfill, pylons and a telemast

Mid-West Aggregates, a subsidiary of the Lagan Group, is applying for planning permission for a quarry at Boolatin, Toor, Newport, Co. Tipperary. Permission for a quarry on the same site was refused in August 2008 when local residents expressed concern over the development. (Tipperary Star 2/7/09, p. 11).

Aslan are to play a benefit gig for the campaign against the proposed incinerator in Nobber, Co. Meath at the Headford Arms Hotel in Kells on Friday August 28th. An oral hearing on the incinerator is expected to take place in September. (Meath Weekender 4/7/09, p. 13).

Indaver signed contracts last week for the construction of the main phase of the controversial incinerator at Carranstown, Duleek, Co. Meath which has been opposed in a 10-year campaign by local residents. Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks. (Meath Chronicle 4/7/09, p. 6).

A decision on the second judicial review of An Bord Pleanala’s granting of permission to Greenstar Holdings for a landfill at Usk, near Kilcullen, Co. Kildare is expected on Friday July 3rd. Local residents have been fighting the proposed dump for the last twn years. (Leinster Leader 2/7/09, p. 8).

EirGrid has described the recent report on undergrounding of the proposed electricity interconnector commissioned by North-East Pylon Pressure (NEPP) as containing a number of ‘flawed calculations and conclusions’. In responsea spokesperson for NEPP said EirGrid’s comments ‘would merit no more than a D in Junior Cert Science.’ (Northern Standard 2/7/09, p. 6; Anglo-Celt 2/7/09, p. 2; Meath Weekender 4/7/09, p. 18).

A Kildare group, Silent Scream, concerned over a Tetra telemast at Leixlip garda station has failed in its attempt to meet with the EU director general for health and consumer protection to express its concerns over the health effects of telemasts, particularly on children. The director general, who was in Ireland recently to attend the National healthcare Summit at Croke Park, where entrance cost 500 Euro, was unable to spare 15 minutes to meet with these concerned citizens. (Leinster Leader 2/7/09, p. 8).
