CELTIC LEAGUE PRESS INFORMATION

The Manx branch of the League, which was hosting the forty-first AGM of the Inter-Celtic body, told visiting delegates that plans recently revealed in the UK to consider giving the go ahead to a third generation of nuclear power stations on the sites of existing plants posed a particular concern to communities around the Irish sea.

NUCLEAR SITES EXPANSION CONCERNS

Given the fear and uncertainty which surrounds the operation of the
nuclear industry the decision to consider developing new nuclear power
plants is worrying delegates at the AGM of the Celtic League were
told this weekend.

The Manx branch of the League, which was hosting the forty-first AGM
of the Inter-Celtic body, told visiting delegates that plans recently
revealed in the UK to consider giving the go ahead to a third generation
of nuclear power stations on the sites of existing plants posed a
particular concern to communities around the Irish sea.

There had been numerous incidents and accidents over the years with
the older plants and there was now the added threat posed by terrorist
organisations. In addition the question of the safe treatment and
storage of all waste generated by the earlier nuclear programmes was
still unresolved.

The meeting unanimously supported a resolution, moved by the Manx
branch, expressing concern about possible new plants.

Resolution text below:

"This AGM expresses its concern at the reported plans by the British
government to develop third generation nuclear power stations on the
site of existing plants and reaffirms its total opposition to the
siting of nuclear installations on the perimeters of the Irish sea."

The Celtic League has branches in the six Celtic Countries. It works
to promote cooperation between these countries and campaigns on a
broad range of political, cultural and environmental matters. It focuses
on human rights abuse and civil liberty issues and also monitors the
impact of military activity.
