More info on Ammo ships bound for Cork

Further information on forthcoming visit to Cork Harbour of US Navy cargo ships carrying weapons, ammunition and supplies.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is "not concerned" that the forthcoming visit of two ammunition ships to Cork Harbour will breach Irish neutrality.

The ships in question, the 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin and USNS Eugene A. Obregon are due in the harbour on 29th August. It is believed they are heading for the Mediterranean.

The ships were recently involved in Operation "Dynamic Mix 2002" (May-June) and were part of a squadron which off-loaded more than 450 pieces of military hardware — delivering the equipment for US Marines participating in the NATO exercises off the coast of Spain. Obregon and Martin both belong to a squadron of six ships strategically prepositioned in the Mediterranean, which together carry enough combat equipment and supplies for about 17,000 U.S. Marines for 30 days.

Photos from Operation Dynamic Mix 2002 show military tanks being offloaded from the Eugene Obregon. The department of Foreign Affairs told me that they had sought assurance from the US Navy that the ships were not carrying nuclear weapons. It seems that other weapons (such as tanks and missile launchers) don't concern the Irish government.

What is the official reason for their visit?

Yeah I'd be interested to know what the official line on this one is and compare with what they are actually doing. also if there is any direct action going on?! surely this activity should be targeted along with Shannon airport?

I think they may be just refueling, restocking or something before they send the arms on further. If we can stop the bastards from docking it would possible halt their arrival wherever they are going, thus disrupting whatever conflict, war game or butcher they are going to. Local agitation has global effect. We should organise to do what we can to prevent their landing.

In all fairness, these Navy lads are stopping here for a breather on their way to protect our consumer culture from SATAN (apparently, the US have obtained proof from an Israeli scientist that Saddam Hussein is the character after whom the Omen films were made). We should also remember that withoutout their brave cousins in the Air Force, we'd all be speaking Osamalan right now (or Noriegan, or Ortegan, or Allendan, or Engelan,[oops!]).
Bearing all this in mind, it behoves all us good and righteous citizens of this bog city who don't have a drop of third world blood on our hands (we fucking saved them with Bob and Bo-no, sure, didn't we?) to meet and greet (in the Scottish vernacular) our liberators.
Up with the good ole USA!
Down with the other nasty shower, whoever they are this week!

Nah, seriously, big shout out to the boys.

Just a short note to let you all know that according to today's Ireland on Sunday the US ammo ships have cancelled their planned visit to Cork as a result of opposition. Maybe a bit more opposition would achieve similar results in Shannon. See you all next Saturday at the Airport.
