CELTIC LEAGUE PRESS INFORMATION

CAPE WRATH - US NAVY EXERCISE CONDEMNED

The decision of the British government to allow the US Navy to utilise
Cape Wrath, off Northern Scotland, for military exercises again this
summer was condemned at the AGM of the Celtic league held this weekend
on the Isle of Man.

The League has monitored military exercise activity in the Celtic
countries for twenty-five years and the Secretary General told the
meeting that the one problem that was common to such land and sea
usage by the military was pollution.

Already large sea-bed areas in the Irish sea are heavily polluted
from military exercise activity and any extension of this to other
areas is to be deplored.

The meeting adopted a resolution critical of the US forces access
to Cape Wrath and protests are to be sent to the British Ministry
of Defence and the US Defence Attache at the London Embassy.

Resolution text below:

"This AGM: Mindful of the long term impact of military exercise areas
and firing ranges deplores the decision of the United Kingdom Ministry
of Defence to allow United States Forces to utilise the Cape Wrath
area off Northern Scotland for military exercises."

The Celtic League has branches in the six Celtic Countries. It works
to promote cooperation between these countries and campaigns on a
broad range of political, cultural and environmental matters. It focuses
on human rights abuse and civil liberty issues and also monitors the
impact of military activity.
