Painting under Maharaja Man Singh of Jodhpur

A Chester Beatty Library Lunchtime Lecture:Thursday 21 May 2009 at 1:10pm

Dr. Debra Diamond,Associate Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Washington, DC.

Dr. Diamond is curator of Garden and Cosmos, The Royal Paintings of Jodhpur, a ground-breaking exhibition of newly discovered Indian paintings from the royal court collection of Marwar-Jodhpur (in the modern state of Rajasthan, India). The exhibition opened in Washington in October, was then shown in Seattle, and will now open at the British Museum later this month, where it will be the focus of the museum’s “Indian Summer”.

Produced for the private enjoyment of the Marwar- Jodhpur maharajas, virtually none of the 60 works on included in the exhibition and which Dr. Diamond will discuss in her lecture have ever been published or seen by scholars since their creation centuries ago. Strikingly innovative in their large scale, subject matter, and styles, they reveal both the conceptual sophistication of the royal atelier and the kingdom’s engagement with the changing political landscapes of early modern India.
