éirígí marks 93rd Anniversary of 1916 Rising

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Saturday April 25, 2009 16:20author by éirígí PRO Report this post to the editors

éirígí activists yesterday marked the 93rd anniversary of the 1916 Rising with a series of banner drops and the erections of dozens of posters.
Ballymun
Ballymun

On the morning of April 24th 1916 the Easter Rising began with proclamation of the Irish Republic and the seizing of key buildings and other vantage points across Dublin. Yesterday éirígí activists across Dublin marked the 93rd anniversary of that day. In a dozen locatoins From Ballymun to Sallynoggin and from Tallaght to Finglas banners and large placards were put in place. In dozens of other locations posters of James Connolly and Padraig Pearse were displayed.

Over the course of the last two weeks hundreds of copies of the 1916 Proclamation and the 1919 Democratic Programme were also distributed on a not-for-profit basis accross the city. All of these activities are part of the ongoing 'Reclaim the Republic' campaign that éirígí has been running for the last three years during which 80,000 copies of the 1916 Proclamation have been distributed.

Below are some images from yesterday.

Are silly little photo ops all eirigi ever does. i see them doing very little union work or anything else long term, they just turn up with a few flags and banners and think that is enough. Well comrades it's not. get real, do some real political work like the socialist party or people before profit.

Yeah right. That's all we ever do. What a laugh. A cursory look at the éirígí website will show you that the party is very active. Sorry it doesn't live up to your expectations. Grow up.

Yeah eirigi do take photos.

Yeah eirigi do turn up with banners.

So whats your problem,myself?

The photos and the banners you talk about with distain or is it jealousy are photos of many activists who turn up at the many protests and events country wide(the whole 32 counties)which eirigi and its supporters attend.

As for the other groups and parties you mentioned, when is the last time they championed a cause from infancy as opposed to piggy backing from start to conclusion.

Remember the calls for a national strike,a worthy cause i must add that those afore mentioned publicly demanded, what happened to that cause for example?

Well let me tell you it was dropped like a hot cake when the main unions called it off,why dont they get the courage of their convictions and carry this issue through or is it a case that they only persue popular issues or publicly attach themselves to issues that they feel are gonna happen therefore gettin kudos for doing nothing to furthur issues to conclusion.

Ive been at their meetings, dont mean to sound bad but on socialist politics alone which is their bread and butter they are still scratching around trying to figure out how to get the message out as if socialist politics is a big secret .

What an extraordinarily negative and egotistical post from “myself”. But it’s good at least to see his/her non-sectarian views towards the Socialist Party and People Before Profits . Both of those groups usually have the same negative attitude towards each other as “myself” has towards eirigi .

Eirigi does more than turn up with a few banners at demos . The group is actively engaged in trade union work , community struggles such as in Rossport , work on the national question , support for liberation struggles abroad and for the anti-war movement in Ireland . More importantly though imo , it is a party that is neither afraid nor ashamed to identify itself as Connollyite and to openly call for the smashing of capitalism - something which neither the Socialist Party and People Before Profit do in their election material .

There are other options too you know!! ;-)

Better options. Grassroots driven co-operative community oriented options. Ones that are driven first and foremost by fulfilling the basic needs of the 99% and maintaining the environment as opposed to just serving the insatiable destructive greed of the 1%

The title of the photo essay says eirigi marked the 93rd of the 1916 rising. This is 2013, so it should have been about the 97th by my calculation. I know eirigi tends to go back in time historically, but let's get some elementary arithmetic right for starters.
