Faced with starvation and death, nearly 200,000 Tamil people are trapped in a small area in the north of Sri Lanka. They have been in a nightmare situation since early January. There are no facilities - water, food, medicine or shelter. There are no hospitals in the area. There are no facilities to treat the injured. There are no services to deal with the growing numbers of dead bodies.
These horrors go beyond those seen in all the years of war in Sri Lanka. Over 3,000 people have died in recent weeks. The Sri Lankan government of Mahinda Rajapakse refuses to cooperate in a ceasefire. All critics of the government are silenced.
It is said by United Nations agencies and by other international agencies that around 50 to 70 people get killed every day in this conflict. The UN agencies have accepted over 2,000 have already died in the conflict during the last few months. Over 40,000 civilians who crossed over to government controlled areas have been caged behind barbed wire, with no access to relatives and friends and with no right to leave the barbed wired camps strictly controlled by the Sri Lankan military.
Within these camps, life is a nightmare with paramilitary groups given access to pick out “would-be Tiger infiltrators”. Though unconfirmed, due to no civilians in these camps wanting to testify for fear of their lives, there are many reports of youth being taken away and disappearing and young women being raped.
The horror being visited upon Tamils in Sri Lanka by the war-mongering Rajapakse government in Sri Lanka is criminal. We need to send a message of opposition to these horrific acts that are supported by many international powers, including the Indian government.
