Symbolic protest at Eircom HQ over Amdocs deal

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Wednesday March 04, 2009 00:28author by Kev - IPSC (pers cap) Report this post to the editors

On Tuesday 3rd March members and supporters of the Irish Anti War Movement and Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign staged a symbolic hour long protest at the Eircom HQ on Military Road in Dublin.

The protestors were highlighting the fact that an IBM led consortium, which includes the Israeli company Amdocs, may soon win a major contract with Eircom for a new computer billing system.

Such a move would contravene the international boycott campaign against Israel. Political organizations and civil society within Palestine, and among others in Ireland the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, have called for a boycott and divestment campaign against Israel until such time as they reverse their settlement construction, illegal occupation and annexation of land in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

well done on focusing in on one aspect of the growing connection between Irish business and the state with Israel. If the boycott campaign is to have any chance it needs to focus on specific cases like this one- rather than blanket tactics ...has there been any coverage of this eircom deal in the more mainstream media?

I think more and more Irish people can become supporters of this cause- especially after watching the destruction of Gaza over the Christmas live on TV- there is not much support for Israel out there. Even Michael Martin spoke in very strong terms against Israel at the FF Ard Fheis.

Also according to the Guardian's Ben White the occupation does not just go in Gaza but continues daily in the West Bank http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/feb/20/isr...-2009 - it is there that the future Palestinian state is being beat down- also reading David Lynch's A Divided Paradise at the moment which shows at a daily level the continuous crushing of everyday Palestinian life in the West Bank. And also the campaign should never forget the Palstinian refugees across the Arab world as well.
The focus must be on Gaza at the moment of course- but the Palestinians suffer in many places, and Israel wants us to forget them.

In case people do not know, O2 also use Amdocs as their central billing system. I was involved in a massive upgrade project about 3 years, working alongside Israleis in the 02 buildings in Sir John Rogersons Quay and other places.

The Amdocs Irish HQ is in East Point Business Park in Dublin, across from the Centra store if anyone knows where that is.
