Fair-trade dessert making competition
JUST DESSERTS’ Annual dessert making competition with public tasting to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.
Hosted by Galway City Fairtrade Committee, Amnesty International and Oxfam Ireland. This lovely event will take place in the Galway City Museum, Spanish Arch, Galway City at 4pm on Thursday 5 March 2009.
Last year in Galway over 200 people showed up at our inaugural ‘Just Desserts’ competition in the Galway City Museum where they sampled delicious Fairtrade desserts made by ten of Galway’s top restaurants and cafés. The winner in 2008 was a delicious Tunisian orange cake made by the Cobblestone café.
This year, instead of leaving it to the professionals, the competition is open to everyone. All you have to do is bake, make or cook your favourite dessert using at least two fairtrade ingredients and bring it to our family-friendly, free event on 5 March in Galway’s museum.
The general public will then be invited to sample all the desserts and vote for their favourite one. The person who baked the fairtrade dessert that receives the most votes will be declared the winner of the Just Desserts competition 2009 and will be presented with a Fairtrade hamper.
While the dessert lovers are putting put their taste buds to work they will have the opportunity to hear from Costa Rican coffee and sugar grower Wilbert Valverde. Wilbert will explain how Fairtrade makes a difference to his cooperative ‘Coopeagri’, and his whole community.
Entries for this competition and to the event itself are free, but there will be opportunities to donate to both Amnesty International Ireland and Oxfam Ireland at the event.
The closing date for entry is 2 March. By this date you must have submitted your recipe (listing the two Fairtrade ingredients) to the organisers below:
Marie-Anne Michel at Amnesty International Ireland, 2-3 Middle Street, Galway, 091 533 637, [email protected]
Agnes Sage at Oxfam Ireland, Abbeygate House, 9 Lower Abbeygate Street, Galway, 091 561 491, [email protected]
