Globalisation and Vulnerability: Showing what is happening to society EDA invites you to our first Public Talk in 2009. Globalisation has become a subject not only of vigorous academic and public debate, but also of active political struggle. The central question that is being fought over is what is its impact on society: is it improving the quality of life around the world or, as the critics claim, leading to greater poverty and inequality? This talk proposes a new way to look at the issue through using the concept of vulnerability. The talk argues that we need a new concept to capture the distinctive ways that globalisation is impacting on all our lives and livelihoods. The talk will define what is meant by vulnerability and illustrate its impact through examining a number of areas of our social life, particularly the global financial and economic system and the environment. As a country that has been called one of the most globalised in the world, Ireland is also examined to see how vulnerability might be manifesting itself and its consequences. The talk will end by some suggestions about what can be done to counteract vulnerability. |
