NATIONAL PLATFORM CAMPAIGN BULLETIN No.1- The Nice Re-run Referendum THIS BULLETIN: We will be sending this bulletin occasionally from now on to a wide range of activists on the No-side in the Nice Re-run Referendum. We did this also in the lead-up to the Nice referendum in June last year and were told that many found that useful. The National Platform is a research and information group that seeks to provide information on EU-related matters to whoever wants to use it. We seek to ensure that our material is legally accurate so far as facts go, and can draw on experts in EU law for that purpose. People are free to make whatever use they wish of the material we send out. We have no more strength than the merit of our arguments, and it is for you, the recipients of this bulletin, to judge of these. NATIONAL PLATFORM CAMPAIGN BULLETIN No.1 - The Nice Re-run Referendum

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3The political establishment claim that nice is about enlargement and making life better for the eastern european applicant countries.
However they forget to mention that the people of these countries are to be treated as second class EU citizens under Nice. No one from the applicant countries, will be allowed freedom of movement within the EU (like we have when going to the UK or Continental Europe)for at least 7 years following their entry into the EU. While farmers in Eastern Europe will not be allowed policies which greatly aid farming such as c.a.p etc.
This is unacceptable, and again contradicts the idea of a europe of equals.
Nice also creates a two tier europe divided between the big countries(Generally those who created the body, however contains some exceptions) and the small nations who will have a decreased say in the already bureaucratic affairs of Europe.
Nice, is also far more sinister from the point of big business.
Under Nice much of our services are going to be privatised. Including water, waste, and perhaps even the unthinkable way down the line, education.
Recently a 10,000 page document was leaked, The organisation of which it came escapes me at the moment. It detailed everything and anything that could be privatised... This is what we have to look forward to if Nice is ratified.
Already the establishment has allowed some sectors of public service to be privatised such as the luas which is being run by french firm connex, the train company which has a terrible record along southern england. While there is talk of privatisation of the bus network. If nice is accepted we are looking at a europe where the "fat cats" make a huge profits putting profit before safety. In essence we are looking at a Bosses Europe. The 20 richest people in Europe are now worth over €130 billion, yet at the time of the last Nice referendum unemployment had risen from 2.5% in 1973 to 10%.
The Nice treaty calls for "Measures of liberalisation" privatisation in another word.
The so called "declaration" on Irish neutralitily is, quite frankly a ploy on the part of the political establishment to make the people vote yes. This "declaration" is NOT law and can be ignored in the case of a serious conflict etc.
Real European Co-operation is impossible on the basis of Capitalism, due to conflicting economic interests between competing states.
Nice will not bring internationalism. Neither will the current European Union. The only alternative is a voluntary democratic socialist Confederation of europe, with public ownership of of all major industries planned for peoples needs and not big business greed.
Questions to ask yourself before you vote:
1. Are you in favour of the creation of a European Army that will carry out acts like the bombing of Iraq, and Serbia (in 1999)? Acts which resulted in the murder of thousands of innocent people? Acts to be carried out in your name
2.Are you in favour of attacks on workers wages and the creation of conditions of low pay, in order to help increase the profits of the "fat cats" and "bosses"
3.Are you in favour of an increase in exploitation of Young people and workers throughout Europe?
4.Are you in favour of the policy of fortress europe, condemning thousands of people to misery throughout the world?
Vote No to nice. Demand a Socialist Alternative
Safety before profit. No to a bosses Europe.
C'mon Shane how many times are you gonna paste this SP newsletter. Can't you articulate a Socialist position on Nice without simply regurgitating the same article???
God this National Platform seems to be a great little organisation altogether........but wasn't their chief spokesperson attempting to stir up racism a few weeks ago a a weapon to defeat Nice???
In one of the few good things this government has done it announced that there would be no restriction on Immigrants coming to live in Ireland from the countries of the newly enlarged europe....
The chair of the National Platform criticised this...and attempted to ferment racist attitudes in Ireland in order to get this treaty defeated again...........there are more importanat things than this...........one of those is defeating racism, not encouraging it.
PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!
