A celebration of the life of Bob Doyle

category international | anti-capitalism | event notice author Wednesday February 04, 2009 21:55author by fm Report this post to the editors

After a long and happy life kicking against the pricks, our friend and comrade Bob Doyle has passed on.

Join us in a celebration of Bob's life in Dublin on 14th February.

ˇNo pasarán!
ˇNo pasarán!

Family members and friends from Spain, Germany and Britain will come to Dublin on Saturday 14th February when we will celebrate the lives of Bob and his comrades of the International Brigades.

We'll be starting at 12 noon from the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, before proceeding down O'Connell Street to Liberty Hall, where a wreath will be laid at the plaque to the 60 Irish who died for democracy in Spain.

We'll then retire upstairs to the lobby for songs, a few speeches and light refreshments with Bob's friends and family. Musicians will include Christy Moore, whose song "Viva La Quince Brigada" has become a hit at veterans gatherings.

Please bring your banners and your voices.

This event is supported by the Doyle family, the International Brigades Memorial Trust, the Communist Party of Ireland and Bob's many friends in the Trades Union and Republican movements.

The BBC broadcast a piece on Bob last Friday, with interview fragments and reminiscences from Bob and his family.

It's the last item on the link below...

The turnout today was far more than I imagine was expected, if the crammed room in Liberty Hall was anything to go by! Large groups had travelled over from the U.K and further afield, and marched alongside a fine mix of the Irish left.

One of the wreaths left outside Liberty Hall was signed on behalf of several European Anti-Fascist organisations, and the point was made made again and again by various speakers: As long as one person resists fascism, the fight goes on.

There was a fine mix of speeches and musical pieces at the reception, including a resounding sing-song of the Internationale. A fine send off, nice to see Bob come home to Dublin and I think everyone there today will remember the day with fondness. I don't want to even take a guess at the numbers to be honest, I'll leave that to others.

No Pasaran!
