On Sunday evening (4th January 09) about a hundred and fifty people gathered at the war memorial in the centre of Derry to protest at Israel's escalation of its continued attacks on Gaza.

The protestors listened to a speech by Eamon McCann, of the Derry Anti-war Coalition. He highlighted that Israel's often repeated justification for their action was entirely spurious. The rockets fired by militants in Gaza are aimed not at Israel but at Palestinian territory illegally occupied by Israelis - an important distinction and one obscured by much of the mainstream media.

He again called on the City Council to tell Raytheon that their weapons plant was not welcome in the city. Afterwards the anti-war protestors staged an impromptu march down Shipquay to the seat of Derry City Council the Guildhall.
