As a follow on, the RIAA website was the victim of a DOS attack early this week. This is one of the types of attack that the legislation, pushed by the RIAA, proposes should be legal to corporations who believe their copyright is being broken.

The slashdot discussion (link) is a bit off the mark but interesting.

This Bill is just crazy! It is a direct assault on the cyber
community and is the not-so-thin end of the wedge to justify
all kinds of assaults from the intelligence and security services
on all kinds of sites.

It is quite amusing that this Bill gives the nod to Corporations to
hack away with impunity, but another recent Bill, mandates extremely
long and harsh sentences to individuals who 'hack' into any computer
systems. So in other words it's okay for Corporations or their agents
to go and abuse any site they want, with the excuse of 'we suspected there
was copyrighted material', but some teenager just poking around
can end up going to jail for up to 20 years.

The power of the US Admin and their Corporate backers has now become
so strong that they intend to wipe out all forms of dissent and clearly
see the Internet as one of the main targets.

Yeah and still $500m dollars in stock market frauds is okay too.

am I right in saying that any text article on computer - say you posted it to IMC - is breaking copyright? - wow the spooks will have a ball

This seems to be unworkable - everybody could claim "reasonable suspician" that the target computer is engaged in copyright infringement activities and then legitimately hack it.

What's the betting that this will make it'
s way into WTO agreements - and we won't have any say after Nice on whether it becomes our law (all trade negotiations will be done by the commission after Nice - this includes intellectual property protection).

BTW - this comment is copyright seedot - therefore I have the right to hack the machine of anybody who reads it.
