from tipp originally but now living in donnycarney -can well remember my dad telling us kids about Captain Hogan
well done on this comemoration - i'll be there in memory of my dad .
Hi Larry !
Thanks for that comment - much appreciated !
It's a small but important gesture to remember men and women like Martin Hogan - all too often in this rushed 'mé féin' society we tend not to bother or think of those that are perhaps considered 'lesser known' in our history.
If you have your own kids now , Larry , you could bring them with you on the day or at least tell them where you're going , and why . I dare say like my own kids , they won't learn or hear about the Martin Hogan's of this world in school .
Thanks again !
Sharon.
I echo those comments about remembering lesser known martyrs of our shared past...I'm a school teacher who'll be taking a class for Leaving Cert History and covering the War of Independence and Civil War era...I'll make sure that Martin Hogan gets a good mention!! History is full of stories like these which never make the headlines and the school curriculum brushes over so many individual sacrifices made for the common good because it doesn't suit a particular agenda...while I will probably not make it to the commemoration, I'll try to honour Martin Hogan's memory in class alongside all other forgotten heroes of that age. Adh mor oraibh!
Hi Máirtín !
I had stated that kids nowadays " won't learn or hear about the Martin Hogan's of this world in school.. " and then you come along and 'make a liar' of me by stating - " I'll try to honour Martin Hogan's memory in class alongside all other forgotten heroes of that age. Adh mor oraibh! "
And I'm delighted to hear it ! What's more , if any of your professional colleagues are reading this , I invite them , too , to 'make a liar' of me !
Our history is indeed full of 'Captain Hogans' , Máirtín , and if we had a few more like yourself we would all perhaps know more about them .
Thanks!
Slán go fóill anois,
Sharon.
I'm confused. Sharon says Mártan Ó hÓgáin was killed in Poll na gCapall in Tipperary. The commemorative stone on Gracepark Road, Whitehall, Dublin 9 (which I pass everyday, as I live in the area) states: 'Mártan Ó hÓgáin...a dúnmharaíodh ar an láthair seo' (translation: Mártan Ó hÓgáin...who was murdered at this spot/here).
Where was he killed and what were the circumstances of this death?
Bricriu
Hi Bricriu !
I'm waiting on more information re this issue , but found this myself -
1923
Capt Martin Hogan IRA. KIA Poulacapple, Co. Tipperary. From Dromineer.
From here -
http://forum.irishmilitaryonline.com/showpost.php?p=394...t=118
It's not surprising that there would be some confusion over issues like this , as many combatants were 'lifted' , interrogated , tortured , executed and dumped (usually in areas in which they had no connection with , to make identification harder) by enemy forces .
When/if I find out more info re Mártan Ó hÓgáin I will post same on this thread.
Thanks!
Sharon.
" The time of Captain Ó hÓgáin's death was the period in which the Free Staters sanctioned the executions of seventy-seven anti-treaty POW's . It was the period in which Free Staters tied nine POW's to a landmine at Ballyseedy before detonating it and riddling the mangled remains with machine-gun fire..."

Sharon
that went very well on sunday - the weather and the plain clothes gardai were the only minus points.
My two young sons were most taken with you , you have a way with kids , a sincerity that seems to register with them
congrats to rsf for doing this
Larry
Hi again , Larry !
You have two very bright and alert young kids there , Larry - treasures , both of them , a credit to yourself and the Missus ! I really enjoyed my brief time chatting to them and walking them down to the corner - real little charmers , the pair of them!
And I'm glad you're happy with our wee ceremony on Sunday - it was dignified , and fitting . Apologises for the two 'minus points' : one we could do nothing about and the other... well , what can we say ? Their intention is to keep our supporters off the street but you made it very clear to them that you won't be intimidated in that fashion . Good for you , Larry !
Thank You - and the kids !

Thank You for that information - much appreciated !

Commemoration to be held next April for Captain Mártan Ó hÓgáin .
Hi !
A wreath-laying ceremony was held today (Saturday 25 April 2009) in Whitehall , Dublin , at the Commemorative Stone to IRA Captain Mártan Ó hÓgáin .
About one dozen Republicans attended and the wreath was laid on behalf of the local Liam Mellows Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin .
A report and pictures will be published in the May 2009 issue of 'Saoirse' , which goes to print next Wednesday , 29 April 2009 .
Thanks!
Sharon.

Thanks!
Sharon.
The wreath laid yesterday (Sat April 25 '09) by RSF.
Hi all.
Just wondering if there's ever any more commemorations for Martin Hogan. The Anniversary of his death was a few days ago. I pass by the memorial every day. With a decade of commemorations I think it would be great to revive it.
Thanks
Hi Pa!
I was just now in contact with the pro of the RSF cumann (the Liam Mellows Cumann) in that area and was told that they have incorporated that commemoration into the main Dublin RSF commemoration on Easter Monday as they felt it was unfair to honour Martin Hogan "at the expense" of other republicans from that same area - the cumann is unable to commemorate each and every such local Volunteer and did not want to be accused of 'favouring one over another'.
But I agree with you, Pa , re reviving same , and have suggested to them that they hold one local commemoration at which all such republicans could be publicly remembered.

There is a tribute (drawing) to Martin Hogan in my great uncles diary he kept while under internment at the curragh.

Rob.
Hi Robert!
Thank you very much for re-activating the thread, and for your offer - really appreciated!
I'll contact you by e-mail, Robert, and we can have a chat, if that's ok with you?
Thanks again,
Sharon.
Is this the rapist Hogan we’re talking about? He was murdered but showed no mercy himself to the woman he gang-raped. Bad cess to him - a disgrace to Ireland
Hi James!
Was that not an atrocity carried out by members of Martin Hogan's family/relations?
'Margaret Kennedy, a grandniece of some of the men charged in a district court in Nenagh with the gang rape, is interviewed in the documentary. There is a monument to Martin Hogan, the ringleader of the raid on the Biggs house, and a suspect who was never charged with the rape of Eileen Biggs, on Dublin’s Grace Park Road...'
