In response to the digger, to compare the suffering of Palestinians with that experienced by some Israelis is morally vacuous.

Last year, 7 Israeli civilians were killed. This is an awful thing, no two ways about it. However, Israelis in general do not live in fear of an occupying army, aren't thrown into prison, or starved or incarcerated in bantustans.

On the other hand, hundreds of Palestinian civilians were killed directly by the Israeli army in 2007. I say directly because hundreds more were killed by the siege of Gaza - the cutting off of food, water and medical supplies.

In addition, thousands are in Israeli prisons where torture is a commonplace event, according to Amnesty International. In addition, millions of lives are being blighted by the trauma of experiencing Israeli military occupation.

Israel is the occupying power in the region and in control of whether this suffering continues or not. So far it has vowed only to intensify the suffering of Palestinian civilians. This is why we are protesting on Saturday.

I think most decent people - those who approach this issue honestly - can understand this.

This is what the people of Gaza have to endure.

GAZA CITY, 16 February (IPS) - Human remains mix with
debris following the latest Israeli assault Friday on
Bureij camp in Gaza Strip. Early reports listed nine dead
and more than 50 injured. A targeted leader was killed,
but many others were killed too. "It's very hard for us to
rescue, or even locate bodies beneath the building," said
a medical relief worker from the local Bureij hospital.
Israel has not confirmed responsibility for the missile
attack by F-16 aircraft.

If the Israelis stopped their attacks on Gaza & the West Bank and left all of the Occupied Territoroes then the Palestinians would not have to take defensive actions.

This Saturday 23rd February the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign are calling on all supporters of the Palestinian people to take to the streets as part of a global day of protest to end the siege in Gaza. This is an international day of protest with demonstrations taking place across Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

The IPSC's protest action will take place from 12.30pm onwards at The Spire on O'Connell St. in Dublin city centre. We will distribute information leaflets regarding the current situation in Gaza and host a petition which will be presented to the EU offices at a later date. There will be a few short speeches by representatives from the Palestinian community, the IPSC and the Irish Anti-War Movement.

This siege has gone on for too long with completely inadequate media coverage and blatant inaction behalf of the EU, while the Irish government has failed to raise the issue in any significant manner. The EU is aiding and abetting a clear breach of the Geneva Convention.

This demonstration needs your support. We need as many people as possible to come along and bring flags, placards, banners etc. It is important that we show the world, the EU and the government that Ireland does not support the Israeli state's brutal policies towards the Palestinians.

End the Siege of Gaza.
End the Occupation of the Palestinian Territories.
End Israeli War Crimes.
