July 24, 2002

(12:53) A number of traveller families whose caravans have been seized by Gardaí in the Ennis area have begun High Court proceedings for the return of their vehicles.

During the hearing, counsel for Clare County Council said it was in a position to provide, on an emergency basis, a large mobile home at Liscannor, where the travellers had been located previously.

Mr. Justice Roderick Murphy asked if it would be more equitable for the travellers' own caravans to be returned to them pending further proceedings rather than supplying a mobile home to them.

Counsel for the Gardaí said he would have to take instructions on the Judge's proposal.

The Judge has adjourned the case until later today to allow time for consultations to take place.

The court heard that the families, which have several children, have been broken up because of the caravan seizures.

It is understood that the cases before the High Court today are not connected to the families who are staying on the front lawn of Bishop Willie Walsh's home in Ennis.

Ours isn't a forum (socialist or otherwise!!!) its a sp public meeting. (we have them in our own name) The meeting is on the far right in europe, but the issue of racisim is relevant. It is a meeting with a speaker from france and a local speaker. Come along if ya like anyway bye

I didn't mean the "real world" line as a jibe. I spend as much time in front of the computer as any anorak! And I can be as lazy as the best of them! I apologise anyway I didn't mean it as a jibe just thet we have to organise something on the outside it was a point thats all. (and I think indymedia is excellent too!).
If you're at the meeting stick around I won't get there till late cause I have to work (capitalist bastards!) But I should get there towards the end.

One of the most sucessful actions in last couple of years taken against deportations is the anti lufthansa on line civil disobedience actions mobilised by No Border No Nation network which managed rapidly to depress the share price of said airline rapidly until it refused to take deportees. As for travellers and substitution - I seem to have met some travellers supporting RTS right to protest on the demo immediately after the 'nightmare on dame street'. Campaigning against an unjust and unconstitutional law that may effect the possibility of politically motivated occupations / demonstrations / sit - ins helps the travellers - helps the broad left / environmental campaigners too - substitution? - maybe if a bunch of lefties set up some mobile homes or called for a travellers against Public Order act - but it does effect everybody -

Have got a call from another socialist party to say there is another 'forum' involving refugee groups on saturday.

I'm going to duck now for a while . . . . thanks for the invite red sp

The SP has organised a public meeting tomorrow on the issue of racism and the far right. The traveller issue is part of this debate. I would suggest blisset should come along to the meeting and put forward a proposal. Then hopefully there should be ebough people to organise something.
We can do some propaganda on the issue. But at the end of the day we must support travellers rather than trying to subsitute for them. In other words it is travellers organisations which should call for protests etc (as they are) For us to do it alone (without travellers) would be the wrong way to go and as likely alienate them. Travellers themselves have been organising protests which the SP wholeheartadly supports. Anyway get your thinking cap on and come tomorrow and see if we can't do something.

The internet is well and good for debating, but when it comes to action we need to organise something in the real world.
As for Joe higgins not doing anything for travellers ever, whoever wrote that doesn't know what they are talking about, it was the traveller vote in mullhudurt that helped him win the council seat after campaigning together for a halting site.

I don't know where you got the idea that the Socialist Party do not assist to the maximum extent possible, asylum seekers.
The party has been very active on the issue.

(1) Everyone involved in IMC campaigns on something. Duh. We're all real people.

(2) Indymedia aren't campaigning against the Nice treaty; the idea is to cover the often neglected aspects of the campaign, especially other European activists' perspective on the Irish vote.

Sure beats the usual bickering around here - i like to try to provoke some debate that is not the same old boring swp/gr/rts/anarcho/sp bickering - RTS holier than thou attitude pisses me off sometimes in those debates - reclaim the streets - for who? - travellers live on the roads - and their lifestyle is being destroyed rapidly as we watch - reclaiming burgh quay for an afternoon once a 6 months is fashion - pretty cool fashion but fashion all the same - what about the public order act that aidan was so eloquent about RTS starting a campaign against on the late late show - now it is being used like billy-o - where is the rts - on their holidays for the silly season?

blisset, why throw out these kinda questions?

What are you doing for travellers / immigrants? why do you assume other people aren't doing anyting?
groups like rts, while not being single issue campaigns are set up for a specific purpose, and i don't think it'd be suitable to turn it into anything else. i think almost everyone involved in rts is active in at least one other group / campaign.
I'm not involved in afa but they've allways been involved in support for travellers and immigrants.
are you involved in anything yourself? if so why not tell us about it and maybe invite people to get involved,

billy

well rts is about reclaiming the streets from the hustle and bustle of car driven capitalist lifestyle, perhaps people involved in that might do stuff individually but rts are concerned with the above.

socialist party, well now joe is busy serving in a capitalist parliament so why should they concern themselves with the serfs on the ground?

the swerps, well as far as i know they cant sell many papers around the issue, eh? out the window, no paper sales no support, we are the real revolutionary paper sellers! no other, yee haw!

sinn fein, do you really think a party based on bigotry could really support people that are being oppressed? tee hee

afa, maybe? i havent heard anything from them in a while though!
