can I ask if OSF have found out the actual plans for its preservation and conservation and also
to draw attention to the Government's plans for a shopping mall and cafes at the GPO.
It will also have a museum, apparently. the entire area is up for'Civic regeneration' and it would be
interestig to look at plans for the whole Carlton area including the HQ, the GPO, The Catlton
cinema complex and to see how these projected plans effect the whole ideology of urban
regeneration for community or for profit?
I believe the extent of the palns for the area would be included in any urban regenerative
plan for the city centre-either in the DCC offices or as part of the urban renewal plans of
the NDP- The focus should be on the area and how it responds to the needs of
'community' within the city centre and for those who may be utilising it for commercial
purposes. Community needs should preceed the profiteering of developers and regenerating
our communities whilst retaining the historical or iconic significance of the buildings
is important to the needs of 'now'.
a good starting point is to look at whether consultative processes have begun in
discussion with all effected communities- these usually come under EIS-
Environmental Impact Assessments and under the aegis of An Bord Pleanala.
DCC has copies of NDP.
Ownership of land titles and consultation with environmental awareness groups
such as An Taisce are useful places to go and search for relevant info- has OSF
got an eco lobby ?
Certainly it has no aesthetic value whatsoever and calling it a meeting place of the Provisional Government is stretching things a good bit. For one thing it would also depend one’s view of the reality legitimacy of this “Provisional Government” which many would regard as suspect. If it can be regarded as the Government of Ireland why not the regard the Army Council of the Provisional IRA as the legitimate Government as many SF types do or at least did. Ditto 32 County Sovereignty Committee or the INLA Army Council or the new Republican breakaway lot or whoever proclaims themselves thus.
the shopfront looks interesting and the signage alone makes it worth a visit. Plunkett heh? Any connection I wonder to the landlords with republican connections that owned half of Ranelagh?
When so much of Dublin is being torn down for speculative development, consideration should be given for the preservation of anything which survives, however insignificant.
The urban legacy we're leaving our children is a decidedly early 21th century one which is rendering the capital indistinguishable from cities all over the world. Sure, they'll keep the Metal Bridge, Merchants' Arch and James' Gate and all that stuff but who remembers Darby Square or Patrick Street/Clanbrassil Street prior to the road widening in 1990?
Whatever about it 1916 connections, the shop should be kept as a monument to the 20th century.
Its status as a National Monument is worth sod all by the way. If the moneymen who control what the city looks like want it gone, it will surely go. Look at Lismullan...
ÓSF could do us all a favour by finding out what exactly the Corpo say they're going to do about it, but should be equally prepared to occupy the building like their grannies and grandads did before; those who own the Carlton site don't give a shit about anything except money and a bit of a kick in the arse wouldn't do them any harm.
Well said there, the last poster. The truth of the matter is that if they found the lost city of Atlantis, the first thing they'd do is put in planning permission for apartments.

Why leave the project to Dublin City Council? I have a hard time believing that the shinners (or Republicans in general) don't have the money to purchase this property if it was for sale and they wanted it.
Hit up the Americans. You'd have the money in a weekend.
