ESF- Organising for Florence 2002 1. ESF- Organising for Florence 2002 At the beginning of this new millennium we find ourselves in a situation where the power structures are shifting more and more towards corporate globalisation. In response to this we have also seen a massive growth in protest movements throughout Europe and around the World. In March 500,000 people demonstrated in Barcelona against capital and war. The same month also saw 3 million demonstrating in Rome against Berlusconi and for trade union rights. In France millions have taken to the streets against the growth of Le Pen’s fascist National Front. Here in Ireland thousands took to the streets to defend civil rights after the deplorable violence of the police on the Reclaim The Streets demonstration, and in Britain and Ireland there have been huge protests against Bush and Blair’s war, and in support of Palestinian rights. The European Social Forum was called after the success of the 2nd World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, which was attended by 70,000 people. As this represented a 300% increase in attendance the organisers accepted that one venue could no longer accommodate the growing social movements globally, and that regional fora would be essential to welcome the similar increases expected this year. The European Social Forum is backed by hundreds of trade unions, NGOs, human rights groups and others campaigning across the continent. “The ESF is a vital event in the growing campaign against so-called globalisation and the militarism that backs it up. I urge everyone to do their utmost to get there.” “The Porto Allegre World Social Forum in February 2002 brought together “The European Social Forum provides an opportunity for people of different views to develop a dialogue on the future of Europe, and hopefully will help us all to articulate a much clearer vision of a people centred social Europe.” “At a time when the EU is building up its military capacity for aggressive The Irish Mobilisation for the ESF are holding a public meeting in the This leaflet is produced by the Irish Mobilising Group for the ESF. Jonathan O'Shea, a 22-year-old backpacker from County Cork, was refused bail at a court near the Woomera camp. He is due in court again next week. The mass escape took place three weeks ago. Among the escapees were two brothers from Afghanistan, aged 14 and 12, who arrived at the British Consulate in Melbourne. Alamdar and Muntazer Baktiari’s pleas were turned down and they have now been returned to Woomera, 600 miles away. Video and audio links at Support letters can be written to
Dear Folks, I have been doing some follow up press work in Ireland on Jonathon's imprisonment.....giving the context of the OZ government's cynical racist policies, the tradition of the sanctuary/underground railway movements, encouraging the Irish government and people demand Jonathon be granted bail so he can prepare his defense etc. We willl try to organise a presence at the Australian Embassy in Dublin, if Jonathon is denied bail on Thursday. He's in Jail for Us, We're on the Loose for him, Solidarity in Ireland Ciaron and Globalise Resistance will be organising a screening of “WOOMERA”, the story of the huge refugee break out from the infamous desert camp next Saturday August 3rd. More details next week. 3. You are G8, We are 6 Billion: A new book by Jonathan Neale Sometimes it's easy to forget that just one year ago 300,000 people took part in the biggest anti-capitalist demonstration Europe had seen. Thousands travelled to Genoa to voice their anger to the heads of the eight most powerful countries in the world. But demonstrations don't happen spontaneously. Hundreds of activists across Europe were involved in planning transport, organising the marches, discussing slogans and debating tactics. For those of us involved "behind the scenes," to see it all come together was an inspiring event. Jonathan Neale was a member of the Genoa Social Forum that planned and coordinated those protests. His new book You are G8, We are 6 Billion is a first hand account of the events leading up to that demonstration and the aftermath. Invited onto the GSF, partly as a result of a typically impassioned speech at an organising meeting some months beforehand, Jonathan was involved in many of the most crucial discussions and debates before and after Genoa. Written in Jonathan's inimitable style, this book gives a wonderful feel for those exciting times. But also this is an attempt to explain the anti-capitalist movement, to look at the issues which brought 300,000 people to the streets of Genoa, and to explain why the events of 11 September and its aftermath have failed to dampen the movement. "Hope comes through at every stage and Neale concludes with a vision of a very different sort of world which we could build for ourselves, warning us of the resistance we must expect from the powers that be but confident of the outcome. Everyone who wants to understand this movement, its origins, work and objectives must read this book." Tony Benn available from GR in Dublin Price e15 4. STOP ESSO stickers available from GR Pick them up at the STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS gig this Thursday at Club Mono 5. US- out of America!
