Kildare - Event Notice Thursday January 01 1970 'Break the Connection' - Mobilise for Bodenstown '07
This year’s commemoration at Bodenstown, County Kildare will take place on Sunday 24th June, with people being asked to assemble in Sallins at 1.30pm. The main speaker will be Sinn Féin Party President Gerry Adams.
![Click on image to see full-sized version bodenstown07.jpg](../cache/imagecache/local/attachments/jun2007/460_0___30_0_0_0_0_0_bodenstown07.jpg) "That the influence of England was the radical vice of our Government, and that Ireland would never be free, prosperous, or happy, until she was independent, and that independence was unattainable whilst the connection with England existed."
So wrote Theobold Wolfetone over 200 years ago in bold defiance of British tyranny in Ireland.
Often considered the founding father of Irish Republicanism, Wolfetone although a member of the Protestant Ascendancy, struggled for Catholic Emancipation, and strived through his organisation the United Irishmen to ‘Unite Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter.’
Wolfetone led the brave, yet tragic, 1798 rebellion against the might of the British Empire, it was a case of peasants with pitchforks facing down cannon and cavalry, as Seamus Heaney wrote,
“Until... on Vinegar Hill... the final conclave.
Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon.
The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave.
They buried us without shroud or coffin
And in August... the barley grew up out of our grave.”
The United Irishmen, Wolfetone and the sacrifice of all who fell in 1798 is a continuing inspiration to Republican’s today. Their ideals and bravery leads us to remember that Sacrifice every year at Bodenstown.
Indeed Padraig Pearse delivering an oration at Bodenstown in 1913 said,
“Wolfe Tone was the greatest of all that have died for Ireland whether in old time or in new. He was the greatest of Irish nationalists. I believe he was the greatest of Irish men. And if I am right in this I am right in saying that we stand in the holiest place in Ireland and that the holiest sod of a Nation's soil is the sod where the greatest of her dead lies buried.”
So it is with great pride that Ógra Shinn Féin will march out again this year 2007, to commemorate Wolfetone, paying tribute and honour to his sacrifice, and pledging to continue to fight until the aspirations for which he died, are achieved.
Shortly before his death Wolfetone wrote,
"From my earliest youth I have regarded the connection between Ireland and Great Britain as the curse of the Irish nation, and felt convinced, that while it lasted, this country would never be free or happy.”
Let us mobilise at Wolfetone’s grave, gathering inspiration from this great father of Republicanism, and strengthen our resolve to ‘break the connection with Britain’ and to unite the people of Ireland, ‘Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter!’

And the way to do this is Join a British force, uphold British laws, sit in a British sub-government, sell out all your republican ideas and comrades.
Well done Gerry and the lads cant wait for YOUR UNITED IRELAND or should I say GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. The brits broke SF and SF destroyed the IRA
I'm just curious how everyone thinks Theobald himself would feel about three seperate republican groups marching to his grave in the same month. I'm sure that he, as a founder of the UNITED IRISHMEN, would rather they were, eh, united. Well?
I wonder will Paisley allow McGuinness to attend? I can't wait to hear Adams trying to draw comparison between Tone and the present sell out.
At this stage it might be best if Gerry and co just joined forces with Fianna Fail for their Bodenstown commemoration. You are after all following in their political footsteps so you might as well follow their footsteps to Bodenstown or why not just give up going there after all you have given up everything else at this stage.
The same old rubbish from the history department. Have you actually done anything to further republican politics lately? Been to any protests, any meetings, stood in any elections, joined in any campaigns? Or is just all keyboard stuff with you now? Attack Sinn Féin and leave everyone ellse alone...
RPM, you and your RIRA pals can attack Sinn Fein all you want but you won't change the fact that we are the Republican Party doing the most to achieve a United Ireland. Where is your large mandate?????
Hi Doire !
......fancy meeting you on this thread ;-) !
Doire has stopped speaking to me because I pulled him up on , amongst a load of other things , this comment he made - "I don't accept what you say about Kissenger, because I know Martin McGuinness all of my Republican life and I know that he wouldn't associate with a known war criminal."
By the way , Doire - Fianna Fail also parade to Wolfe Tone's grave , they actually have the legend 'The Republican Party' on their literature and they have a "large mandate" .
Will you be supporting them tomorrow ?
Sharon.
No, I won't be supporting a party who uses Republicanism when it suits them. I however believe that one day Sinn Fein will eventually overhaul FF and that day is not too far off. OK so we suffered a minor setback in the last election but that was because the southern electorate were more concerned with other issues like FG getting into government. Meanwhile we remain the only all Ireland party.
Will you all be wearing your nice green blazers again this year?
see: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/71789
Hi Doire !
" No, I won't be supporting a party who uses Republicanism when it suits them. "
Too late for you there , I fear .
" I however believe that one day Sinn Fein will eventually overhaul FF and that day is not too far off. "
So it's 'FIANNA FAIL OUT' rather than 'BRITS OUT' now , is it ?
" OK so we suffered a minor setback in the last election but that was because the southern electorate were more concerned with other issues like FG getting into government."
The "setback" , Doire , is believing that Leinster House can be 'used' to effect a British declaration of withdrawal . How many times have your elected representatives in that institution called for same ?
" Meanwhile we remain the only all Ireland party."
Ooops !
.....another 'Kissinger Moment' on your behalf : see this -
http://www.greenparty.ie/en/news/latest_news/green_part...vices
- then tell me that it's Martin's fault for misleading you !
;-)
Sharon.
Poor deluded Sharon, twisting what I am saying to suit your own agenda. I don't support a party which uses Republicanism I am part of a party which has always been Republican since the days of Tone,Emmet and Connelly. Your so called Republican friends are the bad apples who fell from the tree.
Our aim is the removal of the Brits and to replace FF with a proper government in Leinster House. Where else should the government of Ireland sit?
The Green party are an all Ireland joke looking to save the planet. Martin has never misled me I think that you are envious of the way he has won over Paisley and many Unionists.
Hi Doire !
" Poor deluded Sharon, twisting what I am saying to suit your own agenda."
But in your own words you have described Henry Kissinger as a friend of Irish Republicans and have stated that your party is the only all-Ireland party !
Do you still consider those assertions to be true , Doire ?
" I don't support a party which uses Republicanism I am part of a party which has always been Republican since the days of Tone,Emmet and Connelly. "
Tone , Emmet and Connolly administered Westminster's writ in Ireland too , did they ?
" Your so called Republican friends are the bad apples who fell from the tree."
You sound just like a British and/or 26 County politician . You must be proud of that comparision !
"Our aim is the removal of the Brits and to replace FF with a proper government in Leinster House. "
So that's what your 'struggle' is all about - 'remove the Brits' by working for them and replace Fianna Fail with Fianna Fail Lite ! Onwards to 'Victory' , eh , Doire !
"Where else should the government of Ireland sit?"
Where does it 'sit' now ?
"The Green party are an all Ireland joke looking to save the planet."
Wow ! Strong words . I can't help but notice how statements like that were not uttered at all during the recent election campaign by any of your people !
" Martin has never misled me I think that you are envious of the way he has won over Paisley and many Unionists."
He mis-led you in regards to Henry Kissinger 'being a friend of Irish republicans' .
Also , Martin has not so much "won over Paisley and many unionists" as being won over by them !
Incidentally - towards the end of last month , Jose Manuel Barroso visited Stormont in his capacity as 'President of the EU' . Mr Paisley (Martin's boss...) offered Mr Barroso some 'fadge' (potato bread) and told him not to worry about any crumbs as "the deputy" (McGuinness) would "...gobble up any leftovers..." afterwards , a remark which Gerry Kelly described as "top-dog talk..." . Paisley and Barroso roared with laughter , while poor Martin blushed and cringed . Sad.
Onwards to (*BURP!*) 'Victory' , Doire .....
Sharon.
Was tone and Emmet ever in Sinn Fein?
