Food Not Bombs in Galway

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Monday May 14, 2007 22:35author by FNB Galway - Food Not Bombs Galway Report this post to the editors

Free vegetarian food served in Eyre Square as a peaceful protest against militarism and capitalism.

For the second time in the last 6 weeks, Food Not Bombs Galway served free food in the city's main square. The first event was a simple affair, it took only about 40 minutes to give away over 70 portions of home-made soup to passers by. Yesterday the operation took a step forward, with 100 pancakes cooked on site along with fruit salad and lemonade. The majority of the food was surplus donated by local businesses.Literature relating to the Food Not Bombs ethos, vegetarianism, social justice, etc was also available for those interested in reading it.

There will be a public meeting of Food Not Bombs Galway this Sunday 20th May in Rabbitte's Bar, Forster St (just off Eyre Square) at 4pm. We're going to discuss how to make this an ongoing event, all are welcome to attend.
Please call Rimas at 085 1306097 or Niall at 087 6532965, or email [email protected].

Great to see the FnB banner hanging proudly in central Galway-keep it up!
The idea seems to have faded away in Dublin, maybe you might spur a revival of interest..

Fair play guys, nice to see something productive AND proactive. Keep up the good work! It is great to see that local business is playing a role too, maybe this country still has a heart after all.

i understand, that delivering food to poor/eldery people would make more use, but we choose to do it publicly, because it's is not only about giving food, it is also a form of a peacefull protest, a creation of an island in space and time that is free from hierarchy, prejudice, commercion and all other kinds of bullshit. it actually doesn't matter, if the people that come to have some food are really in need for that, it matters, that those who come, see that these family-like interactions in our society are possible.

Hey,
Just thought I might point out something. This was a statement against capitalism/militarism right? But most of the food was donated by local business right? Is it just me or is there a real hypocrisy there? cause these businesses are inherently capitalist. It seems flawed when you add the capitalist angle. Thanks.
