IAUC Welcomes ‘End Of War’ Statement From UVF
Washington, DC Friday, May 4, 2007 - The Irish American
Unity Conference (IAUC) applauds the statement from the
Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) indicating that they have
ended their war and that they will assume a non-military,
civilianized role.
IAUC President John Fogarty said: “We welcome the
renunciation of violence by the UVF. The recent election
and power-sharing agreement indicate that the people of N.
Ireland want to settle their differences through purely
peaceful and democratic methods.
“We praise the UVF statement which said that they were
going to cease recruiting and training members. Their
commitment to deactivate all of their units and to support
all lawful authorities will further stabilize the efforts
of all political parties to govern effectively in the new
Stormont government slated to commence this May 8th.”
The UVF, a paramilitary ‘loyalist’ group who supported the
continued union of N. Ireland and the United Kingdom
(UK), was formed in 1966. Since then, they have murdered
more than 500 people, including their 1974 bombing campaign
in Dublin and Monaghan which claimed the lives of 33 people
in one day.
President Fogarty concluded by saying: “We look forward to
all parties working together in N. Ireland in a democratic
fashion. We feel confident that peaceful coexistence of
the Republic of Ireland and N. Ireland will eventually lead
to a united Ireland based on the consent of all the people
of Ireland.”
