The problem in sligo is that there is no left to speak of. Labour has torn itself apart over the Election nomination and Sinn Fein are not doing as well as they should. (Well wishes to Seán by the way. hope hes better soon)

The Mayday march was organised by a group called the connolly forum which is headed up by Declan Bree. I'd imagine he wont be too long in Labour and is trying to ressurrect some semblance of the old ISP. But the problem is Bree himself. Hes an arrogant abusive stalinist who wont allow anyone to share the spotlight and people have just gotten pissed off with him. As long as Bree is on the scene the left in Sligo will be divided and thats they way he seems to like it.

Thats it in a nutshell really. Thats why feck all turned up to the event.

I have to say I am disgusted with the very poor turn out for the Sligo May Day protest.
Some blame must fall on the organisers though. It was poorly advertised with very ambiguous posters which left the punter unsure as to what was taking place.

The lack of a high profile speaker did not help matters. It seems unlike Cork and Dublin the left is fragmented in Sligo and somewhat disillusioned in its stagnancy.

When Kat or Ned or whoever else invariable posts on Wednesday to say that the event was a roaring success and attended by multitudes, will you please supply photographic evidence?

The 'Connolly' Forum/Talkshop has been found to be a little economic with the truth when it comes to such matters.

THIS year’s annual May Day ceremony to mark International Workers Day will be celebrated with a commemorative event at the site of the Lynch memorial plaque in New Street, Sligo, on May Day, Tuesday 1st of May, at 8.00p.m.
The main speaker at the demonstration will be Tim Mulcahy of the Connolly Forum.

The President of the Connolly Forum, Clr. Declan Bree said it was appropriate that the ceremony would take place in New Street outside the former home of John Lynch. "John Lynch was a committed socialist and internationalist and he was the founder of the modern labour movement in Sligo. "He led the workers in the famous 1913 Dock Strike in Sligo and organised one of the few units of the Irish Citizen Army established outside Dublin. John Lynch was first elected to Sligo Corporation in 1913. He was Mayor of Sligo on three occasions and served the people of this community with distinction until his death in 1939," said Clr. Bree.
