Irish Glass Bottle March, Liberty Hall, Dublin, 12.00 noon Saturday 20th July.

The following is a letter from Gerry Lynch, Branch Secretary, SIPTU Electronics and Engineering Branch, representing the bulk of the Irish Glass Bottle workers. The route of the march has since been revised to terminate at the GPO.

9th July

Dear Comrades,

We are writing to advise that we are organising a protest march and meeting in support of the workers in Irish Glass Bottle Co. Ltd.

The dispute relates specifically to the company’s decision to refuse to accept the terms of Labour Court recommendation No. 17169 in respect of severance terms for our members.

The march is to assemble at Liberty Hall, 12.00 p.m., Saturday 20th July 02 and proceed to Ringsend [now revised to the GPO] where a public meeting in support of the IGB workers will be held.

We are calling on all Branches of SIPTU, other Unions, all politicians and the General Public to support the march. We would ask that any group of workers who wear a uniform would wear this on the day of the march and any group of workers from a specific employment would identify themselves by displaying the appropriate banners and placards.

The issues and cause of the workers of IGB reflects the need for improvements in existing redundancy legislation, an issue for all. As is the criminal approach of Ardagh PLC, in the way they have closed IGB and thrown our members on the unemployment scrap heap.

We would ask for all your help and support, in any form, and look forward to a positive response to our request.

“A harm to one is the concern of all”

Yours sincerely

Gerry Lynch
Branch secretary.
