Belfast protest against Shell exhibition

Around ten Shell to Sea activists took part in a protest today outside the Odyssey Arena's W5 attraction in Belfast, where a wildlife photography exhbition sponsored by Shell Oil is being presented from today.

Shell sponsoring this exhibition, part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition run by the Natural History Museum in England and the BBC, is nothing more than a cynical PR stunt and the activists present displayed images and handed out leaflets showing the true environmental impact of Shell's actions throughout the world.

Well done again to the crew in Belfast. Just wondering, did ye encounter any difficulties with security at all? We hear the Mayo-style bullying by cops has now reached Dublin, and we're curious to know if it has travelled across the border as well.

We were lucky enough that the security was busy through most of the protest with other events that were going on in the arena at the same time. However, as the protest went on a number of them did come up to us and they asked us to leave. We told them that we were staying until we finished our protest (we had agreed to stay until 1pm) and so the head security guard radioed through to the desk to have the police called. As this was going on we continued to hand out leaflets to people going into W5, and we ended up staying an extra 10 minutes or so to see what would happen. Eventually though we wrapped it up and left without any trouble.

SHELL has abandoned its sponsorship of one of Britain’s most prestigious wildlife photography exhibitions after protests by environmental groups.

The oil giant confirmed this weekend it would be severing ties with the Wildlife Photographer of the Year show at the Natural History Museum, London, from this year.
