Protest anti-gay bigotry in NYC

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Tuesday March 13, 2007 14:58author by j.f. mulligan - Irish Queers, NYC Report this post to the editors

In the name of "Irishness" the patricks day parade and city of ny continue to exclude irish and irish-american LGBT folks.

PROTEST THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT:
Irish queers belong in the Irish parade!

The NYC St. Patrick's Day parade is run by a small, nasty cadre of religious-right homophobes -- so Irish LGBT people are not allowed to march. (Queers face the same battle in many immigrant/ethnic communities...) They call the parade "a triumph of Catholic values over homosexuality." Also, while most city & state officials stay away from the parade, Mayor Bloomberg sees fit to march every year. And huge groups of cops & firefighters march in uniform, which clearly violates the city's anti-discrimination laws.

Please join Irish Queers in protesting the bigoted parade -- we need everyone to stand up with us!
Love,
IQ

If the organisers of the march don't like gays and don't want gays in their march that is their business. Leave them alone and stop bothering them.

It's an excerpt from the popular new FoxTV cartoon series called "american dad" whose characters include a gay alien Marvin, the daddy Mr Smith and a hippy daughter. There's also a terrorist whose brain has been transplanted into a goldfish. American dad is a CIA agent. It's one of those pernicious cultural products which by poking fun at issues reduces their importance & thus ensures that ignorance & apathy prevail. But the readership are above such things & will thus be capable of watching this clip and then dutifully returning to these pages of indymedia ireland having enjoyed a little giggle or equally valid stoking their outrage. Here is the long version at just over 3 minutes http://youtube.com/watch?v=L2ae5UxFAvI & here is a shorter clip of the same episode at just over one minute. http://youtube.com/watch?v=XlYd06e551c remember to come back here afterwards!!!

I'd also like to add that I don't think the first photo of a gay porn series uniform fetish (as I presume the picture of the well padded cop above is) makes an appropriate illustration for these pages. But I'm probably prejudiced. I'm also hoping to illustrate by this comment the proper & correct way to bring a "youtube" link into comments. Not that i'm claiming my way is the only way. But it is as it happens & you will learn that - either the simple quick way or the long haunting disturbed nightmare way.:.+

Hey John, homophobic killer cops and AOH crypto fascists can disasociate all they like but paddies day parading down 5th avenue, sponsored by the city and waving Irish flags etc is hardly dissociation. Preventing gays from marching is discrimination, end of story. These bigots represent noone except themselves and a retrograde notion of Ireland that has thankfully passed into the mists. The Irish in America, particularly in NYC have traditionally been conservative and bigoted. Their leaders are worse from the AOH crowd to the paedophile enabling church goons who will parade along with them after mass in the cathedral. It has literally nothing to with Ireland but lots to do with the declining power of the Irish as a coherent political force. Its embarassing and pathetic. More interesting and compelling is the Queens march this weekend which is inclusive and enjoys the support and participation of all the local immigrant communities in the Borough. None of the blueshirt scum involved.

seperate is not equal. that is why irish gays shouldn't have to create a seperate parade somewhere else. its the middle of the god dam city 5th avenue is!

it is not a catholic parade. do people go around celebrating the rosary? wearing badges that say get your catechism up? everone is r.c. on the 17th? no its IRISH.

if the catholic church wanted to have a private event in a church and not on public property where they funded the insurance, secuirty (ie policing) etc. than my friend, they could ban the gays! but it is in the municipality of a major city. seperation of the old church and state roll on .

up the banner irish queers.

to watch their videos, as he would give them "marriage". IT caused a bit of debate back when it happened. I wondered which it was "videos" or "politics" noting that generally people with large video collections do poor politics. Anyway - during the course of that debacle I learned that members of the Irish LGBT (which I've always insisted should either be alphabetical BGLT or demographic BGLT) wanted Mc Dowell to implement same sex union legislation akin to that used in France. I wondered loudly "why copy the French PACS law?" Anyway - as of two days the first "gay marriage" celebrated by French Green mayor (as in politics not colour of skin) between 2 men in 2004 (c/f http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3775847.stm ) has been anulled by the French supreme court.
France is quite close to Ireland. It proved the inspiration for Ireland's first republic, declared by mr Wolfe Tone and his splendid connaught showband. It is rumoured and quite probably hypothetical that the men of Mayo of that age preferred the masonic recipe of the French revolution with its utter contempt for christianity to the masonic recipe of the previous US revolution with its thinly veiled epicurianist Jefferson sentiments "of the right to pursue happiness". Anyway - ( I like that word - it builds tone ) Anyway - why haven't the BLGT/LGBT crew noticed or reported it? You can't leave these things up to a hetro-living conspiracy. ;-)

"why would your group want to be part of such a bigoted, homophobic, fascist parade anyway? have an alternative parade if you were UNIVITED."

Quite possibly to enjoy the day like anyone else... or perhaps to stand up for their rights in a general sense... Whatever the reason there is no way a group should be banned from a publically funded celebration simply because of theeir sexual orientation.

And come on, you can't really be serious in comparing the gay community to Nazis...can you???
