Vote for all candidates pledged to abstain from puppet Stormont.

category international | politics / elections | press release author Tuesday March 06, 2007 16:28author by Seán Ó Murchú - Sinn Féin Poblachtach - Cork Report this post to the editors

Eve of poll message from Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin

I welcome today’s full-page advertisement in the Irish News (Belfast) from 320 “Irish Republican Ex-POWs Against the RUC/PSNI and MI5”.

Since the Stormont regime insist on styling the six Republican Sinn Féin candidates as Independent Republicans it can be assumed that this call to vote tomorrow includes the Republican Sinn Féin candidates.

The names of our candidate for Mid-Ulster, ex-hunger striker Brendan McLaughlin, and our Patron, 105-year-old Black-and-Tan War Veteran Dan Keating, are included in the listing. As an ex-POW and ex-internee at various stages of the struggle over the past 50 years, I myself call in this Eve of Poll Message on the electorate to vote for all candidates pledged to abstain from the puppet Stormont assembly.

The above-mentioned RUC/PSNI has been active during the campaign in harassing Republican Sinn Féin workers. For the RUC/PSNI nothing has changed only their name, and for us the Cause is still the same and the call remains unchanged: “Vote for a totally New Ireland and an end to British rule here.”

To all Republican Sinn Féin election workers we say: “Congratulations on your exertions to date. Continue to strain every muscle and nerve in a last effort until close of Poll tomorrow, March 7. Our noble objective requires all we can give.”

"As an ex-POW and ex-internee at various stages of the struggle over the past 50 years.."

You are not the only person to have been put through the mill by the combined forces of repression and collusion. I have been there too, but I believe that there are limits to who we should or should not support. Republicans need to get away from the simple mantra of "My enemies enemy is my friend". It has led us into dubious associations before. I would never vote for the likes of McGeough.

Duh!! Hello!!

Obviously he's not claiming that he's the only person to have been through the prison experience. He's commenting on a letter signed by 320 others who experienced that also.

Man!! How PSF like to twist things. Even George Orwell would be spinning in his grave at the sheer neck of it

" I would never vote for the likes of McGeough. '

Good, neither wouldI, now what does he have to do with the above statement? McGeough is NOT standing as a Republican abstentionist, and RSF are standing a candidate against him.

But RSF have now welcomed the letter by the ex pows which calls for people to vote for INDEPENDENT Republican candidates (not RSF who are not indpendent and not necessarily Abstentionist). So they are welcoming the call for people to vote for candidates such as Hyland and McGeough who will take their seats in Stormont if elected.

Republicans should not be fighting over winning an election to the British imperialist Stormont Assembly for fools. This election means nothing for Ireland, it is meaningless.

I'd like to wish all Republicans luck in this election, but my heart isn't in it, I'll wait until we have a 32 county election............

How the hell are we ever going to achieve a United Ireland with one British established House of Fools in the six counties and one in the twenty-six counties?

As a Republican ex-Prisoner I would not vote for anyone who would surrender everything so many have died for in order to serve under Paisley and who would stand alongside the mass murderer Bush when he was about to bomb civilians in Iraq. Remember Hillsborough?

FAO read it

The letter issued by the ex prisoners states:

would like to take this opportunity to call upon all Republicans to come out and vote for Independent Republican Candidates of your choice in the Election tomorrow.

Nowhere does their letter mention anything about candidates abstaining from taking their seats etc Nowhere. Yet O Bradaigh has welcomed this letter and one of the RSF candidates has actually signed this letter.

The letter does state that republicans should vote for INDEPENDENT republican candidates. That excludes RSF as they are not Independents - unless of course you believe and accept the British labelling of RSF as Independents, do you?

So why are RSF welcoming calls for people to vote for Independent candidates (which would include pro stormont candidates McGeough and Hyland) and who are standing against RSF in some constituencies?

Trína , by standing on an abstentionist platform Republicans are, in fact, standing for a 32 county Republic

. No to partitionist assemblies/parliaments, that is how the people got the first Dail Eireann, a 32 county Republic is not possible by bolstering support for rival artificial statelets, Republicans want to build an alternative structure in which the people themselves hold power not institutions that were forced on teh people by the British.

Doesnt everyone on indymedia, despite our political differences, want to change the status quo? Dont vote for those who will work with, bolster and maintain teh status qou, and thats what those who are taking their seats will be doing.

Thats what makes it so strange that one of the RSF candidates has signed this ex prisoners letter which calls for support for Independent republican candidates which would include a number of those who if elected would take their seat in Stormont - McGeough and Hyland. Surely this is against RSF policy, is it not?

And why did O Bradaigh welcome this letter considering it didnt call for support for RSF but for Independent candidates? Stranger it gets.

Cogar, Gerry Dána,

Sinn Féin Poblachtach have made it crystal clear to everyone who cares to hear, that they are calling on all voters who long for a United Ireland, to vote for all Republican candidates who are abstaining from taking their seats in this British Imperialist Stormont Assembly.

So why did O Bradaigh welcome this letter, and one of the RSF candidates sign this letter, which does the exact opposite to what you say.

It calls for people to vote for INDEPENDENT republican candidates (not RSF) - that includes McGeough and Hyland, both of whom are committed to taking seats in Stormont if elected. Was the RSF candidate not n breach of RSF rules by not insisting on only voting for abstentionist candidates and not pro Stormont ones too?

RSF are pledged to oppose any attempt by republicans and progressives to come together and build those alternative structures you are talking about . Ir republicans and progressives attempt to create them RSF are pledged to abstain from them . Doesnt exactly offer much hope for those structures ever to be created , by RSF anyway .

Because there are no RSF candidates standing - only Ind Reps

The RSFers haven't put the party name on the ballot sheet

Capiche ?

RSF beg to differ. They claim to have six candidates running I believe.

Unless of course that they now accept the British designation of them as Independents

RSF members, due to their refusal to take the political test oath, ARE being regarded as "Independent" by the electoral commission and are being listed as "Independent" on the ballots. They are also, as a consequence of being regarded as "independents", being denied media access/coverage. RSF candidates ARE necessarily abstentionist. Gerry McGeough is planning to take his seat. RSF are not supporting him, but are rather running a candidate AGAINST him.
