Anti-War protest at visit of British Navy ship to Cork City

category cork | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Friday February 16, 2007 13:54author by Anti-War Ireland (Cork)author email info at antiwarireland dot org Report this post to the editors

A protest demonstration will take place in Cork city next Tuesday evening (20th Feb) against the visit of a British Naval ship, the HMS Severn.

Anti-War Ireland will hold a protest demonstration next Tuesday at the North Custom House Quay in Cork City against the visit of a Royal Navy ship, HMS Severn which is visiting Cork on a so-called courtesy visit.

Anti-War Ireland points out that this ship represents the forces that are continuing their brutal and illegal occupation of Iraq. AWI has previously protested at vists from visiting US warships but we should point out that Britain is also a vital part of George Bush's invasion force and continues to commit attrocities with impunity as shown by this week's acquittal of a British army officer charged with the murder of an Iraqi prisoner despite damning evidence.

AWI also condemned the invitation of the Captain and senior crew members of HMS Severn to a civic reception in Cork City Hall by Lord Mayor Michael Ahern (Labour) and has called on the Lord Mayor to withdraw the invitation.

Royal Navy warships, helicopters and RAF aircraft regularly take part in sea-to-sea and air-to-sea rescues of Irish people on seas around Ireland......eaten bread is soon forgotten !

Will IAWM protest when RN and RAF save Irish lives again ?

What happened to ye boys ye failed to turn up in Cork for the protest against the Brits, Glad to see ye have finally got sense and stayed away. The crew totally enjoyed their visit to Cork and the friendly people of Cork.

Whats the point of protesting against a fisheries protection vessel when a dutch submarine came to cork last year and no one cared. British/american ships should be given the same treatment as any other nationality.

I stand corrected-sounds like a fearsome force. We should hook up with them.

Surely, our good educated friend, you must have read that Hungary together with Pakistan, and along with Luxemburg, Lichtenstein and FYROM are combining forces to develop a mighty naval force! Who knows - we may see them close to our shores over the next few years.

John,

The best of luck in this afternoon's protest and the Rovic gig later. I hope some of the iawm activists will be joining you there.

Now, as far as the last message goes, I suggest next time a Polish, a Pakistani, a Hungarian or a Japanese warship visits our shores, we ask Mr/Ms Quirke to organise a picket for us to join in order to appear even - handed. Of course, that coalition of the barbarians is getting a bit weak these days with the Spanish and the Italians withdrawing and the Hungarians having a serious look. Still.....

Finally, could he/she amplify Sinn Fein's anti-American agenda for us all....when was it developed, how did it work out in practice over the last few years, and is it still in application? I know that organisation is currently deep in discussion about their attitude to British imperialism....but the Americans??

Incidentally, do the 70% of US citizens who oppose Bush's warmongering also have an anti-American agenda? Not to be talking of 72% of citizens across the water wanting the troops to come home....questions questions....

My inclination "Quirke" is to tell you to just f**k off and troll on another website, but I might as well use this opportunity to further extend the request made in a post above: if you hear of any coalition warships entering Irish waters, let us know. We'd only be too delighted to organise protests. We don't discriminate.

"Anti-War Ireland is a non-party political organisation. As it says on our website it is a democratic, individual membership-based, national anti-war organisation. We are protesting agains HMS Severn because she is a representative of the British military and establishment which continues to wage an illegal war in Iraq. We oppose her presence in the same way as we and others opposed the visits of Bush and Blair to this country."

Contradicting yourself there. Why is it only British & American warships are being protested against. There are several countries in the "Coalition of the Willing" with forces in Iraq but noone reaises even an eyelid when they visit.

For a group that claims to be "a non-party political organisation", you have an agenda that almost mirrors the SF/IRA agenda.

Explain

HMS Severn arrived at Roches Point shortly after 8.00am this morning where she was met by a pilot from the Port of Cork. She sailed past Cobh and the Irish Naval Service base at Haulbowline at 8.50am on her way to the North Custom House Quay in Cork City. An inflatable outrider, possibly from the ship, possibly from the Irish naval service, we don't know, followed her up presumably to protect her from boarders!

Anti War Ireland will picket HMS Severn at the North Custom House Quay in Cork from 5-7pm this evening (Tuesday, Feb 20th).

I am amazed that for such a small, divided and foreign occupied country such as ours there is no shortage of armchair west-brit whingers who still havn't quite adjusted to the fact that we no longer have to doff our cap to a foreign ruler.

Well the last time the Netherlands armed forces played an active role on Irish soil was in the 1690s. The British have a more recent prescence here. Its also worth noting that the Netherlands do claim rights over any part of Ireland; nor do they pretend that they are still an Empire.

HMS Severn could be used as a broom closet for all we care. The fact remains that it's a tooled up British Royal Navy gunboat. The RN was actively involved in the invasion of Iraqi and is an integral part of the British war machine.

With regard to HMNLS Zeeleeuw, we missed it! Damn!! Listen, if you have advance information on similar belligerent imperialist warships entering Irish ports, please do send the information to [email protected]. Many thanks.

HMS Severn is a fishery protection vessel on a courtesy visit to Cork.
They come here the same as Irish Naval ships go overseas on courtesy visits including the UK,

You would think its the end of the World.

The state has eight fishery protection / patrol vessels of its own and doesn't require help, nor is that what HMS Severn is here for. It's so-called courtesy visit as representative of Blair and Co needs to be protested against. See you on Tuesday evening.

Note: for anyone visiting Cork for the Rovics gig and who might like to join our picket HMS Severn will be docked at the North Custom House Quay which is the high-security berth beside the Cusom House in the city and just below Jury's Inn (on same side of river). If you're entering Cork from the east (including Dublin) it'll be just across the river from Horgan's Quay and a mere stone's throw (metaphorically of course, it's a peaceful picket) from the Bus and Train stations.

The picket is from 5pm to roughly 7pm, then, kicking off at 8pm, is the David Rovics AWI fundraising gig in Crane Lane (across from the GPO). 10 euros in, with the money going to a good cause.

Why not make a night of it? Come to the picket and then relax afterwards at the Rovics gig. Should be very good. Check out his stuff on www.davidrovics.com

Here's a photo of the gunboat in question. Not their biggest ship but a representative of the Royal Navy nonetheless.

Good luck with the picket. The British war machine should be kept out of all Irish ports.
