Dublin Shell to Sea Christmas Fundraiser

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Tuesday December 12, 2006 16:55author by Dublin Shell to Seaauthor email dublinshelltosea at gmail dot comauthor address c/o 134 Phibsborough Road Dublin 7author phone 0876181620 Report this post to the editors

Activist group to use takings to help out Shell in debt crisis

Shell Exploitation and Production Ireland posted an operating loss of nearly fifty million euro last week.

With costs associated with their scheme to install a polluting refinery and experimental pipeline in North West Mayo spiralling, the troubled company was shown to be completely dependent on the goodwill and patience of its shareholders.

Among the figures making up the loss, it was noticed that SEPIL paid their 45 staff the amazing seven million, two hundred thousand euro.

This means that the company -which regularly claims it employs seven hundred people- pays it workers an AVERAGE of €160,000 per year (or €3,076 per week). Of course the company doesn’t divide up it wage bill equally, and some of the front men probably don’t get paid much more than the average indymedia reporter, which means someone in Corrib House is doing very well indeed out of losing €49.1 million.

However, today, in an act of characteristic generosity, the Dublin Shell to Sea campaign, helped by the Vincent McGrath, The Rossport Reel, Néilidh Mulligan, the Quare Hawks, and lots of people willing to pay €12 to listen to some fine Irish music at the Cobblestone last night, has decided to pay off the debts of the beleaguered company, to make sure that they in fighting form next year.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Shell to Sea group, explained: “Our costs are very low, since we are all volunteers, and since the gig at the Cobblestone made around fifty million euro, it seemed the decent thing to do.”

“The Department of Justice are obviously spending a lot of money policing our demonstrations as well, so we thought we might get a pub quiz together to help with those costs in the New Year”.

Major excavation is expected to begin at the Bellanaboy Refinery site in early 2007.
