What we have seen in Starmer since July is a petty, inhumane, almost spiteful man who considers himself morally superior to the mass of humanity. This, says Dr David McGrogan, was confirmed in spades yesterday.

++ Linguist and left-wing peace activist Professor Tanya Reinhardt died in New York on Saturday at age 63. ++

If the Israeli left was noted for it weakness before....What now? The Palestinians have lost an ally in this woman. Condolences to her family.

Tanya was a wonderful person, and I'm proud that she twice toured Ireland under the auspices of the IPSC (the second time with her husband, the poet Aharon Shabtai).

Note that Tanya had already been forced to leave Israel, having taken up a position in the USA last December.

It also looks as if another stalwart Israeli supporter of Palestinian rights, the historian Illan Pappe of Haifa University, is being forced to leave Israel. Apparently he's moving to the UK.

Who is left in that wonderful "democracy" to fly the flame? Yet we still hear Israel's fellow-travellers telling us we must do nothing to upset that country's liberal intelligentsia - e.g. by imposing various boycotts - lest we upset some non-existent "dialogue" or "peace process". Tanya Reinhart, like Ilan Pappe, fully supported boycotts as a means of bringing Israel to the negotiating table, boycotts that would be suspended NOT when Israel disappeared off the map, but when that country decided to comply with international law.

Any cultural boycott of Israel should acknowledge those courageous Israeli intellectuals who are as concerned as anyone else about the injustices perpetrated by the Israeli government on the Palestinians. But Irish writers and artists cannot have it both ways; they cannot purport to be 'concerned' about human rights and events in the Middle East and elsewhere and be against the notion of such a boycott; when Israel has no qualms whatever about boycotting Palestinian intellectuals by refusing them travel visas.
