October 2nd-November 1st: Oaxaca- An Overview.

category international | crime and justice | news report author Wednesday November 01, 2006 10:59author by C Murray Report this post to the editors

Reporting the Oaxacan Situation on IMC.

Nancy Davis based in Oaxaca and writer with Narco News Reported on October the Second
2006, that an attack on the popular revolution in Oaxaca was imminent. The APPO asked for
international solidarity. 5000 men were reported heavily armed, wearing soldier uniforms.
Davis said that they were PRI , Police culled from Neighbouring states and it was not a
Federale OP. There were reports of Naval Helicopters.
The Operation was code-named : Operation Cicloncinco

http://indymedia.ie/article/78757

The attack on the APPO: La Assembla Popular de Pueblos de Oaxaca began at 10pm
Local Time :(The Links to the on line radio service of the APPO are at the Nancy Davis
link http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78757)

The Popular Uprising had begun with a teachers demonstration for fair pay , but had
spread quickly into a democracy movement. Many people were injured in the vicious put
downs, but little news reached Ireland. There were a few photo essays and appeals
for help in publicising the issue. The APPO used a communication medium
called Radio Universidad which was based on the Oaxacan campus, it was attacked
and the service is off and on at the moment.

After nearly four weeks of heavy fighting, protestors claim that 16 people have been
murdered by the PRI/Federales forces including: APPO members, a member of the
IMC/Indymedia Community , a Photographer was injured and unamed protestors
targeted by the PRI operation.
The Guardian report that the PRI/Federale forces : http://www.guardian.co.uk, under
Ruiz's control have taken back the Town Square and destroyed the communicatons of the
Popular Uprising.

Reported Deaths:

Brad Will: (IndymediaNYC),http://nyc.indymedia.org/or/2006/10/77777.html.
APPO: Roberto Lopez Hernadez and Nurse Jorge Alberto Beltran http://www.indymedia.ie/article/79351

The NYC site offered a solidarity campign for the people of Oaxaca and a list
for sympathy and solidarity statements from the global iMC community:
The NYC Statement is at : http://www.indymedia.org/or/2006/10/849515.shtml
The solidarity and commerorative service for Will was attacked by the NYC police
and 12 were arrested including Reuters/Indymedia photographer Erin Siegel:
Siegel:http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2006/11/78370.html :Appeal for Evidence

From the Second of October until the death of someone from our community,
very little was reported on the situation at Oaxaca-Obit(http://www.indymedia.ie/article/79365
and Fiachra o Luain, who published here: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/79336)

Operation Cicloncinco has not concluded yet , but the outstanding issues are these:

*The communications media/personnel were direct targets of the US Sponsored
PRI/Federale Put-down.

*The APPO was targetted, the leaders taken out.

*The Radio was targetted on the University Campus.

*The Solidarity Protest at the Mexican Consulate was targetted, the camera equipment
of A woman Journalist was confiscated and she was assaulted.

= The War on the APPO was one of isolation and the independent Media was
a target of the Forces there, both locally and in the wider movement.

Felipe Calderon the Presidnt elect of Mexico, will take office on the First of December.
He 'thinks' that the main problem facing Mexico is the situation at Oaxaca-
The pretty tourist town-(ex-colonial) is under fire from a 'Gang of Lefties' , native
Americans and Mezcal drinkers. (does he mean Mescalito). The tourist industry is in danger,
never mind that the Mexican centre shut down for seven weeks, paralysed because of the
claim of vote-rigging by the Calderon side.

Voters and activist loyal to Andres Manuel lopez are still claiming fraud. Ruiz who is
responsible for the put down will probably face an enquiry at some point, as to the
methods used by the Federales of quashing protest. Calderon has not commented
on the 700 mile long 'Rabbit Proof fence' which Bush agreed as a counter-terrorist measure.
Though the Republican candidate insisted that it was an immigration control method
and that it would be guarded by military and local police enforcement.

The Chiapas Group published the photos of Oaxaca in the last weeks- they are worth
a glimpse : http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78558

Calderon's job is focus attention away from the nasty fence and onto the Oaxaca
situation- thus removing the questions about why a democracy movement protesting
for basic rights and calling for a review of the election were put down so completely.
Emergent Democracy movements are often isolated and lied about in Mainstream
media , that is why alternative media is so important. In Reuters Calderon is quoted
as saying that the issues in Oaxaca are isolated and caused by trouble-makers.

So Calderon actually commented on Oaxaca, He is of course the man that Bush
can work with.He had avoided thus far any allusion to Oaxaca.

Members of indymedia and activists who attempted to get Brad Will to safety after the
shooting have published an eye -witness account of the incident and the aftermath on
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2006/11/78622.html

There was a small solidarity protest at the Mexican embassy attended by anti-war,
LASC, Indymedia chiapas and indy .ie editors and contributors. four gardai.

We asked permission to put up the (((i))) logo (banner) because the others who
died were Oaxacaan /APPO. There were candles and everyone sang a Mexican song.
There were some placards and banners and a few kids. The protest lasted an hour.
Thanks to the organisations who organised and solidarity with the Mexican and indymedia
community, both of whom have suffered in this terrible time.

btw: Brad Will was wearing an indymedia shirt when he was shot.

Go to:
http://www.friendsofbradwill.org

to sign a petition of support for people of Oaxaca. Tariq Ali, Danny Glover, Alice Walker, Naomi Klein and other 'luminaries' have signed. You don't have to be a 'luminary' to sign, but if you are don't let that stop you.

Reports on NYC and New Mexico say that the PFP have withdrawn from the university where
Radio Universidad is located .

Photos on NYC: http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2006/11/78635.html

'The War is on' : http://newmexico.indymedia.org

The PFP attempted to siege the Benito Juarez University in Oaxaca. There was
a helicopter and many injuries, including kids or young adults.

The photos show the PFP taking a man prisoner- all the same nationality,
the cops are having a laugh: This then is the Vincente Fox/Ruiz methodology
put down your own people in favour of the almighty US $.

Neither Fox not Calderon has commented on the 700 mile fence which Bush
wants to build at the border of Mexico and the States. They focus on the put down
of the democracy movement.

Election Corruption =$

Calderon (President elect-after claims of vote-rigging) believes that
the biggest problem facing the Mexican people is the democracy movement
fronted by the APPO- yeah right....

His buddy has signed the releases to build the Rabbit -Proof Fence, (mentioned above)
700 miles of it.

On the weekend of the Brad Will Commeroration (11/11/06), there will be a resistance
to Apartheid Walls campaign in NYC-
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2006/11/78913.html

Its organised by the adhoc coalition 4 justice in the middle East.

The 'Wall' is a double layered border wall, which will be military patrolled, its
a multi-billion dollar US project which 'will further separate communities
break apart families and increase death on the US/Mexican border'.

Brown-nosing the States and turning his back on Ruiz's corruption at one and
the same time.

True Companeras: Women's Participation In The Popular Movement of Oaxaca.

by el enemigo comun- http://elenemigocomun.net/845

The article including interviews with some of the women in Oaxaca is at
link :- http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/02/08/18359710.php

Some of the women are still prisoners, the links to testimonies are in indymedia
chiapas- including interviews with women who have been kidnapped and tortured.

Irish Media Station Newstalk 106- had a holiday company on , urging people to
travel to the post-colonial town of oaxaca [and spend your euros there], which is an
interesting perspective on the put-down of the APPO/95 deaths/98 disappearances,
multiple imprisonments. The hack who was selling 'mexico' said " a Little street
violence should not put people off from travelling'
