Laois Fur Farm Targetted in Day of Action

Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade
LAOIS FUR FARM TARGETTED IN

county-wide DAY OF ACTION

Activists in Stradbally, Co. Laois
Activists in Stradbally, Co. Laois

Residents in County Laois were left wide- eyed and amazed when a bus load of Animal Rights activists leafleted house to house, held information tables and ended the day with an impromptu demonstration at Vasa Mink Farm belonging to Heffernans in Stradbally on Saturday last.21st,October.

ATHY, STRADBALLY and VICARSTOWN were visited.

The towns were saturated with thousands of leaflets as three teams held information tables, collected signatures on petitions and displayed large banners and placards with pictures of caged and skinned mink. After that the activists visited Irelands largest fur farm in Vicarstown (Vasa Ltd).

‘We had fantastic support from passers by and most of the shops were more than willing to hold on to a bundle of flyers for other customers. Some were disgusted about the plight of the imprisoned animals ‘Ms Laura Broxson of CAFT said.

The fur farmers felt the heat as they were blasted with megaphones and angry chants and a very loud and clear message – Your days of quiet country living are now over, we will not let you murder 45,000 mink a year and get away with it. The fur farmers’ neighbours are now well aware of how they make their money for their luxurious life –off the backs of the gassed and skinned innocent animals they have imprisoned in their concentration camp.

‘These animals are kept in cages the size of two shoe boxes until they are approximately 6 months old at which time they will have grown their full fur coat. This is when their lives becomes worthless to the HEFFERNANS they will be thrown into the gas chamber or have their necks snapped, some are not even dead when they are skinned. Some farms use Anal electrocution. Then their bloodied stolen skins will be sold at auctions in Europe to be made into garments or garment trims for the wealthy.’

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A NEW CAMPAIGN FOCUSING ON BOTH THE FUR FARMER AND THE RETAIL OUTLETS.

IFBA? As in Irish Fur Breeders Association?

Yes well you would try to justify fur farming, (having a vested interest in the industry). The fact that it has been happening in this country for as long as you say is hardly something to brag about. In fact it is something to be changed immediately. It is a practice from the dark ages and needs to be done away with, here, as it has in so many other countries.

Here is the truth for you, no sugar coating, just the facts!

Please log onto www.irishfur.com and know the real facts!
Fur farming is a very legal farming activity and is no different than any other farming.
This type of farming is done in many parts of the world!
Mink have been farmed since the year 1860!
Fox since 1880's!
Irish fur farmers take great pride in their farms and the animals that they farm!

indeed go organic and push for higher quality food, the animals are treated humanely at least!!

the sight of a mistreated animal, any animal is very distressing
remember its the public that drives this farming practices (say in the case of chickens), farmers themselves are not breaking the law and they need to make a living like anyone else but if the public demand healthier better quality food then the public will get it.

"Obviously no one wants any creature to be viciously exploited in this way. The problem is, since mink as an alien species can fuck up everything for miles in the wild in this country, there needs to be some way of getting them across the Atlantic if and when they're freed. Hmmmm..."

Nonsense. Fur farming is cruel and should be stopped. There is no need to have animals suffer just for some idiot to wear its fur.

However, if we manage to ban this activity, it would be necessary to HUMANELY euthanise the last animals left on the farms. I see no problems with that solution.

And it's not just fur farming. Much of the farming in this country - e.g. chicken rearing - is done on an industrial scale which means suffering for many thousands of animals. This should be stopped. Farms should be made ensure not just the quality of life of the farmed animals but in doing so ensure the quality of the product.

Good luck with the continuing action!

Gardai in Vicarstown were very helpful and had a great chat with us on Saturday,In fact they knew about our day in advance and had no opposition to our legal information tables, leafletting and demonstration.

That would be great for the old minks but very bad for everyone else.

Mink, are a pest when they are in the iRISH wild, because they have no natural predator, they cause havoc among the other wild life, and can also be dangerous to humans.

I'm no supporter of the fur trade, but don't go thinking that ye are great people if ye release them from their cages.
