In what is essentially a male-dominated mainstream media, these stories do not
capture public attention nor receive adequate coverage because they are essentially
classified as uninteresting. The alternative press therefore has a role to play in
ensuring coverage and raising awareness.

You've got to be joking. If you think that either of the above, and especially the Anna Politkovskaya story is "under-reported" then nothing would satisfy you. The amount of coverage that kidnapped women get (e.g. Margaret Hassan, Giulana Sgrena) is comparable to that which kidnapped men get. I have an un-researched suspicion that due to a misplaced "chivalrousness" which valorizes "women and children" more than me these stories of Western women kidnapped, killed or tortured by Eastern barbarians get higher media coverage than the kidnapped, killed or tortured men get.

Can you point to even one study that shows that women journalists assassinations are underreported compared to men? What about that Veronica Guerin one? Was that an example of the male-dominated mainstream media not adequately covering the death of an uninteresting woman journalist?

It is simple, the article and title indicate that a woman writer is imprisoned in a conflict zone.
The newswire is open to all to contribute- altruistic as it may be to discuss all war wrongs
this is a specifically geared campaign to heighten awareness of violence and womenin
conflict zones.

I imagine that many articles on the newswire would deal with issues and have done so
about the violence of conflict.

*On the 7th of October a woman journalist who covered the chechen conflict was murdered,
her name was Anna Politkovskaya.

*Terry Lloyd was shot by US forces, which is mentioned in the article above.

The issue of writers in conflict is an interesting one, in terms of research and collation, but
the specific article is about a named woman who is at present suffering imprisonment for
writing about the lawlessness in Iraq. Thats what the title says. That is what it is about.

Is that a reason to resent an issue pertinent to women writers -or could something
constructive be achieved in terms of research and publication on your own terms.

In what is essentially a male-dominated mainstream media, these stories do not
capture public attention nor receive adequate coverage because they are essentially
classified as uninteresting. The alternative press therefore has a role to play in
ensuring coverage and raising awareness.

I am looking forward to reading your war article- 130 journalists have died in that
particular conflict. In terms of women/feminist issues a lot of them are subsumed
beneath the editorial bias of a male-dominated mainstream.

Shouldn't you be protesting against violence against any civilians in conflict zones? And not just women?

It's a valid point.
