Labour Councillor Votes Against Corpo Houses

category sligo | housing | other press author Tuesday October 17, 2006 20:55author by Sligo Champ Report this post to the editors

Sligo Labour Councillor Veronica Cawley voted against the provision of 24 Corpo houses in her local area.

Can anyone elaborate or explain the real reason on why Labour Councillor Veronica Cawley, along with two other Fianna Fail Councillors, voted against the provision of two dozen council houses in her locality? The Corpo meeting was yesterday (Monday, 16th September)and I heard a lot of unconvincing talk on today's local radio why these three councillors voted in this manner. As someone seeking housing myself I'm surprised that a Labour councillor would vote this way. Maybe someone from the local Labour party can shed some light on it?

According to the latest opinion polls,Fianna Fail and their Green partners are in political meltdown. After the next local elections I predict Labour and their partners Fine Gael will make massive gains in Sligo, and will end up controlling both the Corpo and Council.Cake Scanlon is wasting his time running under the Greens,he hasnt a hope of being elected.Veronica Cawley, Jimmy mc Garry and Alwyn Love are certain of election. If Frank Mc Garry runs alongside Veronica in the North Ward as rumoured, hes sure to be elected also,as her running mate due to her hugh popularity and the splendid job shes doing during her tenure as mayor of Sligo.

Ned you were listening to different interviews than the rest of us on Ocean FM. He came across as a bitter man obsessed with and hating Jimmy McGarry. The Greens are gonna really regret this in the long term. Its going to backfire badly on them.

Its also interesting that Brian has joined a party that supports refuse charges and always has. That was a quick change of heart on Brians behalf. I always was led to believe that he opposed them but then I suppose thats political expediency for you.

We now have the Bree campaign of vilification against Labour candidate McGarry running on three threads with a range of psuedonyms for cover. He is even posting answers to posts on the wrong thread. Havana take note, training need identified.

That Brian allowed himself to get sucked into this campaign is perhaps understandable but for the Green Party to have walked into it and allow Bree use them as part of his campaign is testmony to the fact that they are indeed green.

Come on Brian, get out of this before you are made a laughing stock and when that happens don't expect Bree to be there for you. Ask former supporters who did his bidding for years only to find that when he get to the Dail, he unceremoniously dumped them as he did those that voted for him.

So the Greens made a special dispensation for Brian Scanlon so he could actively condemn the Bin Tax despite the Greens actually supporting it as part of their election manifesto.

The Greens as conservationists also support water charges yet they’re allowing Cake to deviate again from Party policy on this issue as well? I’m going to have to give Suffolk Street a ring to make sure HQ are aware that one of their candidates is publicly rubbishing some of their core principles.

And you’re also saying that everyone who wore the Mayors chain sold out their working class support! Cake and Bree must have had a serious falling out in that case if Cakes prepared to attack his former colleague in such unequivocal terms.

Of course Ned could be just typing the first thing that comes into his head and considering the huge amount of inconsistencies with Neds claims and actual reality I reckon I’ll go with that.

Brian Costello, the Green Cake was quite unequivocal in the course of his interview this morning when he condemed the County Manager and the political parties like the Shinners who voted for charges, selling out their working class supporters so that they could get their hands on the Mayoral chain. And Wee Jimmy using his casting vote as Mayor and Council Chairman twice to bring in charges locally and increase the water charges on the poor farmers.

I heard he got stumped on the bin charges question someone text in.
Musn't have had Bree in the background to coach him.

Cake is now going to have to support bin charges in line with Green policy. That will go down well with all the working class he supposed to be able to represent.

Mad stuff altogether.

Two absolutely brilliant interviews on Ocean FM this morning of Green Cake Scanlon conducted by two very skilled presenters Niall Delaney and the amazing Gerry Farry,Green Cake was on top form and proved he is indeed a man of the hightest principles and caliber who speaks the truth fearlessly. The Green Cake outlined unequivocally that he still remains faithful to his life long commitments to Socialism and Trade Unionism, and as he now embraces the mantle of the Greens im certain he will do this constituancy proud as a focus for all true left wing and evoirmental voters who cannot vote for new Labour or the Shinners. In the course of the interviews Green Cake outlined how new Labour was now a right wing party that has abandoned the people its supposed to represent, the poor, the underprivileged marginalised and ethnitic minorities. To join new Labour now its almost compulsory to have a degree to get in. Listening to Green Cake its obvious that he will make a very fine representative for this constituancy, hes a Green in the mold of Patrica Mc Kenna ex-MEP who is certain to be elected in Dublin.

I seriously hope that cake is not listening to the advice of Ned green/red/lavender with his rising tide interpretation of today’s NATIONAL polls. Such a haphazard and frankly amateurish deduction that an upswing in the Greens vote nationwide will translate into an even increase for all their candidates in every constituency is quite simply either absurd or stretching the very limit of what could be called spin.

Ned is a great one for the humour though with his dartboard predictions. He actually thinks Cake has a chance of a seat. I think we can dismiss him as a hack.

Sligo Champ

I don't know much about this story - I just read your posting this evening - I am just wondering is there a vested interest behind the planning or a shadow behind it.

Many famous people Champ have hobbies - Haughey's was his obsession with Napoleon, Terry Keane's was an obsession with power, Bertie as a Minister for Finance had the gift of saving money in his piggy bank. P. Flynn's - well his was jumping into 1. 2. 3. i.e houses - remember his interview with Gay Byrne, as the Minister for brown envelopes. Ray Burke engaged in the hobby of dodging the taxman, Martin Cullen's hobby is creating chaos wherever he goes. Dick Roche - well his hobby is about lying every day and all day about waste in Ireland!!!

My hobbies is camera corders at the Galway Races and Veronica Cawley must have a lookalike came out of Berties' tent last year or at least a woman who looked very like her. Of course, I could be wrong.

Sure Champ - do the Tribunals no exist in the feat against corruptions because the vast majority of developers/builders emanate from the West of Ireland. We are supposed to be learning about anti-corruption per consequence (worth looking at Transparency Ireland website on corruption in Ireland and other countries).

Maybe, this little Red Riding Hood knows something the rest of us are not yet aware of..........

God Bless the Taoiseach's two Grandson's tonight - the Nation is proud

but also and importantly congratualions to Mr. Corduff and Goldman Sachs fincial Award to a worthy man who won the Nobel prize for environmental issues............Well done to all involved

One more point, in thirty years time, one could become a punk rocker and one could become in charge of Government or both could want the same....I dread the thought.....

I think Scanlon got swindled into taking the nomination as part of a larger vendetta against wee jimmy.
I honestly dont know why these people waste their time. Nothing they say here or any where else for that matter will effect wee jimmys vote. He wont get elected, but neither would anyone else on the Labour ticket.

Caobhin was actually talking about Sinn Fein support for the Bin tax.

But, Labour councilors in Sligo have also supported the bin tax.

Privatisation is a Rate/Tax by another name so the fact the service in sligo has been privatised is irrelavant in that regard.
In any case, how can socialists (which labour claim to be) approve/support/vote for privatisation of any description?

The price of refuse collection in Sligo, I am reliably informed,is no less than €10 a week. Anyone who had a hand in that realisation should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

The Old fashioned Socialist has it in for SF and rightly so. It is curious that nationally SF have been polling strong and mopping up disillusioned Labour votes and yet they have a poor showing in the North West.

Best practice in this situation would be for the existing SF councilors to step down/stand aside and allow new voices through. The two McManus' polling badly is indicative of their tenure so they must have been extremely weak councilors.

As for Bree getting elected that is highly unlikely. Several other threads here have sunk that as aspirational at best.

For example

He is also regarded as arrogant and self absorbed.
He supported the Tax Amnesty so that says all that is needed in my book

And who do the self styled guardians of republicanism represent?According to the TG4 poll that was published recently, not alot in Sligo/Leitrim.It would seem that Sean and Chris have single handedly broke the national trend for Sinn Fein and sent them into mortal decline in the North West. Its time for them to step down or resign as they are representing no one but themselves.Maybe Bree will see sense and leave Labour. His chances would be good with the announcement that Marian Harkin, the part time TD,has decided to the honourable thing and resign her Dail seat.......

This is another example, if one is needed, of the brazen hyprocrisy of the Labour party in claiming to represent the marginalised in our society. Never forget that actions speak louder than words and for all the fine words in Labour policies, they have never done anything but look after the wealthy elite that vote for them. Labour voters are in the main upper class - (only the Greens have a higher proportion of upper-middle class voters) so remember, if your priorities are true economic reform to benefit the working class, rather than espousing middle class causes, then vote anyone but Labour!

Any notion that Brian Scanlon will ever grace the inside of a council chamber are fanciful thinking.

No disrespect to Brian (Cake) as he is a nice fella and all that but he was a shambles of a Councillor when last there and it would be a long time before people would vote for him again.

Brian has a lot of personal problems that affected and would still affect his ability to not just get elected but to act as a cllr if he miraculously ever got elected again.

People from Sligo will know what I am referring to and will know about occasions whre Breezer had to physically drag Scanlon from the Council chamber.
