news report
Monday October 16, 2006 01:01 by Shell to Sea
If they can't even close the windows in the head office- should we trust that the pipeline won't leak? Last Wedneday, when protesters who are opposed to the destructive scheme that Shell and their partners the Irish Government, Statoil, and Marathon Oil want to impose by force on the people of Erris, scaled the roof of Corrib House, they were surprised to find that the building has windows that don't seem to lock. Eventually they realised that they should just leave a member of their staff guarding the window. I wonder if he thought that was what he'd be doing when he got the plane from England. |

protest garners attention for media types
even sandal wearing hippy types turned up to lend support
but security are still fixated on the window
"this is no reflection on our engineering abilities"
"try flicking the catch"
Eventually the protesters blocked the window and Shell used a member of the Garda to act as security, while their men went around the rest of the building pulling down the blinds.
If you would like to take part in rooftop protests on Shell, Statoil, and government buildings,(or just want up dates on Shell to Sea activities) send an email to [email protected].
dedicated window catch handle-holder
Shell's private security firm (formerly An Garda Siochana) arrive on the scene
It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it...
There is a call out for activists to travel to Mayo for next Friday morning to support the blockade of the refinery site at Ballinaboy- . Most people are travelling on Thursday evening- buses and lifts are being organised from all over the country .
Contact your local Shell to Sea group if you need transport. Details of the Dublin bus are here: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/79062
A broken window latch, possibly damaged by tresspassing protesters, is the premise, apparantly for determining that Shell are unfit for running a Oil refinary.
Well, here's a newsflash... Shell don't make windows. They do build and operate oil refineries. And they do that well.
Articles such as that above, completely overblown, highlight the immature and anal mindset of its posters.
Grow up.
My impression of this story and the photos was that it was a bit of lighty hearted humour, an opportunity to poke fun at Shell. Believe it or believe it not activists do have a sense of humour. And for anyone on the roof that day the huge issue being made about the window by the staff inside was probably hilarious given the circumstances.
The state being supported by its police force for a corporate assult on environmentalism is alarming.
Minister Dempsey 's biased perception of active citizens protecting themselves from a hazardous pipeline of high high pressure gas, is even more alarming. We can make no comparisons, as no country has this - just Ireland. That no proper risk assessment has been properly debated or the wider public informed of the consequences of an accident is again alarming.
What evacuation plans are in place for the length of this pipe if things go wrong. will it have to be guarded at all times in the future- by our police force!! Every extra metre on land is extra risk.
In the era of post 9/11 - if this pipeline is allowed will it be to Hell and to Connaught.
Perhaps the open window is some kind of symbolism.
Please inform yourself on Shells international legacy before we inherit it.
Shell do however give contracts to people to make sure their building is secure.
Someone employed by Shell installed that window, and someone else was employed to check their work before they were paid.
Other Shell employees are paid to make sure that the building is burglar proof.
All the many suit-wearing highly-paid Shell execs were completely incapable of fixing the broken window latch.
Maybe this gives you confidence in the company, but I wouldn't let them be responsible for the safety and security of my dog, never mind my kids and my community.
i can't believe that rte or any other news agency didn't cover this story. thanks indymedia for letting the people of ireland know that something like this goes on. is there any links to window lock sites or even door locks that you can advise.
keep up the good work.
i found the whole window situation extremely funny.
Thanks for making my day.
The logic - or lack of it - in this piece insults the intelligence.
Perhaps I might turn your style of logic back on you. May I take it that the quality of your reasoning in this stupid piece reflects the validity of your protest and the supposed foundations on which it rests ?
Camapigning styles like this really do kill the credibility of the cause that they espouse.
Is there any reason why this otherwise exquisitely balanced piece shows the faces of the victims of the trespass but clearly blanks the faces of a number of the trespassers ?
Just how stupid do you people think that the Irish public are ?
Do you seriously expect to collect support for your cause with this superficial nonsense ?
For those who are knocking this article because of its sense of humour, please remember that no matter how anal you believe this piece to be, you took the time out to respond...
I thought it was a nice bit of light relief. With hundreds of boozed-up aggressive cops roaming the side roads of Mayo looking for trouble, it's nice to see the lighter side once in a while.
Keep up the good work Dublin, see you on Friday!
Well the protest obviously had an effect on you judging by your spittle foaming. As for peoples stupidity posting an anonymous, bitter and bog-logic comment hardly qualifies you as the "the public".
