POW Day of Action held

The Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) has in the past staged a series of white-line pickets, leaflet drops and protests, as well as meeting with various concerned individuals and organisations. Public meetings were also held throughout the Six Occupied Counties.

We have sought to highlight the conditions faced by Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail - a regime which the late Msgr Faul described as "inhumane" after visiting Maghaberry. Shortly before this he had received a delegation from the RPAG.

However we have endured a media blackout. Clearly it is not in the interests of London, Dublin or their hirelings for the people of Ireland to learn of the appalling conditions in which Republican POWs are held in Maghaberry jail or their ongoing resistance to the Brit policy of criminalisation.

Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail have been on protest since the June 19. They have issued five demands. These are:

* Free association
* Freedom of movement
* The right to full-time education
* Separate visiting facilities
* The right to organise their own landings

Supporters of the protesting Republican POWs in Maghaberry jail have organised and executed a number of actions on Friday, October 13 in order to increase awareness. Belfast members of the RPAG attempted to take over the offices of UTV but were prevented by the RUC/PSNI. A letter protesting the lack of coverage given to the POWs' protest was handed in to the UTV offices and read to a camera crew at the gate.

Republican POWs refuse to accept the English government's policy of criminalisation for resisting British occupation.

An RPAG picket was placed outside the gates St Andrews in Scotland to highlight the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry. Whilst the enemies of Republicanism - including the Provos - are inside negotiating ways of bolstering English rule in the Six Occupied Counties, the Republican POWs continue to suffer inhumane conditions in Maghaberry. Those who signed up to the Stormont Agreement signed away political status for the POWs.

In Dublin members and supporters handed out leaflets highlighting the prison protest in the centre of the city. Other events took place throughout the country.

The Republican POWs have declared that their resolve is strong, and that all attempts at criminalisation will fail. They have undertaken 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour fasts, and have refused to eat in their cells since the protest began. (The cells are equipped with a toilet.) There is an onus on everybody to exert whatever influence they can to resolve the situation in Maghaberry before the prisoners' health suffers.

Continuity not compromise!

Political status now!

Protest held in Cork in support of Republican Prisoners.

The Prison Protest by Republican POWs was highlighted when members of the MacCurtain/McSwiney Cumann, R.S.F. Cork and R.P.A.G. (Republican Prisoners Action Group) turned out at 3pm on Friday October 13th at Daunt Square in Cork for a vigil to highlight the continuing attempts at the criminalisation of Republican Prisoners in Maghaberry.

Hundreds of leaflets were handed out, highlighting the present conditions in Maghaberry and the continuing protest for Political Status, which after been won by the sacrifices of ten brave men in 1981 has been removed by the British Government and those who signed the failed 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

The reaction from passers by was positive.

Republican POW’s in Maghaberry have been engaged in a prison protest since 19th June 2006. They are protesting to improve conditions for segregated prisoners in Maghaberry who are in effect being punished for exercising their right to segregation from non-political prisoners. They are demanding that their 5 demands be addressed.

RIGHT TO FREE ASSOCIATION
END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT
RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION
SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY
RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS

The POW’s are relying on the Irish people to stand with them in their fight to improve conditions and ultimately to win back Political Status. The Irish people have never failed POW’s in the past and we have faith that they will not fail them now.

Help end the prison struggle; support the Republican POWs. Political status is a right not a privilege. This issue cannot be ignored any longer, it must be dealt with and these demands must be addressed.

why dont you guys just surrender like the provos did? then you get all the consessions you want, you might even get out early

I wrote a brief message in support of the Maghaberry Republican political prisoners' five demands and the return of political status to them and it was deleted yesterday, so this is my second attempt at posting.

Political status should be returned to the Republicans in Maghaberry Gaol, they would not be in prison at all only for their political activities to rid Ireland of British imperialist forces who are continuing their occupation of this island.

It is an absolute disgrace what is happening in Maghaberry. The Republican political prisoners are forced to choose between fresh air and education or be confined to a cell for 21/23 hours and subjected to constant strip searches and have to eat every meal beside a toilet. The mere fact that they have their freedom taken away from them should be enough punishment for those who wish them to see them punished, but no, it's not enough just to imprison someone, continuous attempts to demoralise and subject them to inhuman degrading treatment and denying them basic rights (access to fresh air) is deemed justified and acceptable by those who delude themselves into thinking they are in possesion of a superior and high moral ground? It is to nobody's advantage to treat any prisoner in this way, it creates tension and an embittered atmosphere and will have a detrimental effect not alone for those inside the prison but those on the outside as well.

Also, the familiies and visitors of the Republican political prisoners are also punished and humiliated, which is an absolute disgrace!

Best of luck to the RPAG.

Come on Guys! Yous aren't fighting a real war, except for blowing up carpet stores and robbing wee post offices yous are just pissing into the wind. You can't expect real POW Status for that?

As Happy Gilmore says why don't you surrender like the Shinners? You'll get all your community associations funded by the Brits. Money thrown at you left right and centre to run your taxis and other such ways to buy and keep your supporters in line.

You'll have nice MLAs strutting round knowing everything and remembering the hunger Strikers while sipping coffee with the Brits and the Unionists.

Come on Lads get out of jail and tow the line, the rewards are Great! Sure holiday homes abroad aren't going to be bought from a prison cell.

Are you feckin mad?
why do you think real Republicans havent sold out yet??
We could have sold out at any time and had all the perks that come with it.
But we dident and we never will!
Insted of aiming for cushey jobs and big cars,we aim to free Ireland!

Dubliner I remember when we used to throw the same insults at the Sticks about Sell outs etc and how we used to say that the fight would continue until Ireland was free. If anyone were to dare suggest that Republicans should share power with unionists and copper-fasten the N.Ireland State then we would have got the same treatment as meted out to touts.
Now the people I remember as being the staunchest and most vociferous on those lines are now those who are totally behind the Sinn Fein leadership in their path to total sell out. Of course we can all see how well these people have done out of the war.

How are you going to continue the war? You are micky mouse compared to the IRA of the 70s and 80s and eventually they were brought to their knees by traitors and those with self interest as their prime motivation. It will all come around again and again.

Tired old chants won't free the Irish people.

Im sure you know that in the 60s before the troubles the IRA were written off as a washed up organisation,
so,givin the right oppertunity the war could start again.
In the 20s,70s and 80s a lot of people who were the main players sold out but a core group stayed.
There will allways be a core group waiting for the oppertunity to have another go at the brits.
History will repeat itself
