Donnybrook Shell Station blockaded

news report
Friday October 06, 2006 22:07 by Jim
A large group of Shell to Sea supporters blockaded the Donnybrook Shell garage this evening for the best part of two hours. There was a a heavy garda presence that attempted unsuccessfully to break the blockade and in the end only drew more attention to the protest. Members of Anarchist Youth, Labour Youth, UCD Students Union, republicans, Irish language speakers and a large number of non aligned activists took part in the blockade. Approximately 8 Gardai attempted to break the blockade and threatened arrest but activists stood their ground peacefully and refused to budge - so in the end the gardaí just stood around re-inforcing the numbers at the blockade. An RTE reporter and camera crew took footage and statements and there was great support from motorists and passers by. For the most part the forecourt was completely empty - when usually at rush hour the station could expect to be full. |

Heavy handed garda tactics
Gardaí form a second line reinforcing the blockade
Great work lads & lassies. Things coming together now.
Love that 'For Hire' banner.
Cops to Sea!
Sorry I couldn't stay around for the blockade, but it seems like it went well. Well done to all involved.
About a dozen people - shadowed by a similar number of cops - picketted the Shell station on the Tallaght bypass last night from about 5:30 - 7:00. It was a very effective protest with only about half a dozen cars going in to the station at what would normally be a very busy time
The one at Statoil on Usher Quay went very well as well. Only a handful of cars went in, and a huge number of horns honked in support!
I expect the management of both Shell and Statoil are cracked up with laughter at you goons. Seeing as neither Shell or Statoil own the petrol stations any longer, it's hardly going hurt their bonuses!
You're missing the point entirely. None of us are foolish enough to believe that even if Shell did own the petrol stations losing the revenue from them for a couple of hours would even register as a tiny blip in Shell's profits.
The purpose of the pickets is to highlight the issue, keep it alive in the minds of people and pledge solidarity with the besieged community of North Mayo.
The station was effectively shut down for almost two hours.
Garda attempts to break the blockade were resisted-they in the end stood powerlessly by and added numbers to the 25-30 activists.
RTE showed up and did an interview as well as taking various camera shots-dunno where or if these were broadcast.
Solidarity with the people of Rossport-keep up the fight -we will stand with you!
Onward!
...of the same-
See here for that RTE interview from Donnybrook-

With attention from State media and police of course
No pasaran!
And everyones watching!
Yeah good blockade last night lads!
I had great craic!
Its a pitty you only got pics from the first blockaded entrence..the second one was the most millitant.
We just walked on front on the second entrence in clear defiance of the cops and after shouting at us to move for a while and telling us that we would be arrested if we did not.THEY DID NOTHING!
great work lads!
when is the next one?
Topaz who own Shell stations continue to get their petrol from Shell
Remember you don't have to blockade a place you only have get the police to do so for you.
Can you picket? oh yeah
the gardaí do a good job of clearing the protestors
...and Statoil!
Shell's new security guard
the heaviest banner in the world
Car illegally parked in the bike lane
cyclists take over bus lane in protest
which do you like best; jam or ring?
note lack of cars
Between 6 and 8p.m., maybe half a dozen cars broke the picket. The rest of the time, the forecourt was largely empty, except for a small police presence.
ah, rush hour
do petrol pumps ever get lonely?
not a customer in sight
with all these police around, you'd swear some1 was building a pipeline illegally
c ya next friday lads!
You acknowledge that Shell don't own those garages but you picket them anyway. You are vindictively hurting the small businessman (don't forget that those are franchises) for your own sordid political gain.
Shell are the sole supplier of petrol to Shell Garages, and it's their sign outside. The Franchise holder should have given some thought to the likelihood of protest actions on his or her forecourt, given Shell's record in Africa, Ireland and elsewhere.
Damaging the Shell brand is the aim of the protests, as well as raising awareness of the situation in Erris, but if you have suggestions of where people should protest feel free to put them forward.
that are using the shell brand in order to flog their products:
stop using the shell name "for your own sordid" financial gain then.
Keep comming. Lots of lovely overtime for the Gardai. Lots of stress and ulcers for the protesters. If you are lucky a few people will sprend about 10 second sympatising with you. Then they will move onto somthing more important. Anything is more important than mayo protesters even watching paint dry. You can't win........ but keep comming....................................
