Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon

Amnesty International Irish Section in association with The Irish Times and Dublin City Public Libraries will hold a photographic exhibition at The Central Library, Ilac Centre, Dublin, called "The Forgotten People".
Hayyat Wehbeh holding a chest containing deeds to the family home in Palestine, photographed at Nahr el-Bared refugee camp near Tripoli in Lebanon. Mrs Wehbeh carried the deeds with her sister Fatimeh when the family were forced out of Palestine in 1948.

The exhibition will feature images taken by photographer Frank Miller, which accompanied a recent series of articles in The Irish Times by Foreign Affairs Correspondent Deaglán de Bréadún. The articles describe the living conditions of thousands of Palestinians who have been in refugee camps in Lebanon since they fled their homeland during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. The exhibition will focus on the humanitarian aspects of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Frequently today when considering the political implications of events in the Middle East, it can be easy to forget the plight of the people caught up in the crises. The exhibition will attempt to underline the humanitarian challenges which are faced in the refugee camps.

The exhibition will launch at 6pm on Thursday 17th August at The Central Library, Ilac Centre. It will be launched by Mr. David Andrews, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross. Mr. Andrews will speak about the current humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibition will then run until Saturday 26th August.

Admission to both the launch evening and the subsequent exhibition is free, and open to both Amnesty members and the general public. There is no need to book in advance for the launch night, just turn up on the evening at 6pm.

The exhibition is being organised by Amnesty International Irish Section's Israel & Occupied Palestinian Territories Working Group.
