I wonder what a Jury would think of this?

Retroactive War Crime Protection Proposed
by Pete Yost

The Bush administration drafted amendments to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect policymakers from possible criminal charges for authorizing any humiliating and degrading treatment of detainees, according to lawyers who have seen the proposal.

The move by the administration is the latest effort to deal with treatment of those taken into custody in the war on terror.

At issue are interrogations carried out by the CIA, and the degree to which harsh tactics such as water-boarding were authorized by administration officials. A separate law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, applies to the military.

I'm very glad that the meeting was a success. I am still mesmerised by that brilliant day in Dublin Four Courts when an Irish jury, having heard you out for three weeks, decided unanimously that you had lawful excuse for your actions.

They also heard that you were not hippies but that all of you were educated and had jobs. Not that it makes a difference to you or me whether or not you had jobs, (and I love hippies too) but it's important to some apparently on this thread.

I remember a line from Senior Counsel to the jury: Whatever happens in this case you should know that you are a very privileged jury (to have been in court to see the five in person giving evidence quietly and sincerely and to be the people who would decide on their guilt or innocence).

It was a great verdict. but no more than you deserved

Well done. You should all be proud.

50 folks attended the meeting in Cork last night along with 4 of the Pit Stop Ploughshares. Absent Karen addressed a peace memorial gathering at the Buddhist Peace Pagoda in Milton Keynes, England, on Hiroshima Day last Sunday.

Discussion last night in Cork included further exploration of the Pit Stop Ploughshares disarmament, jail time, trial & acquittal. Also a call for further nonviolent resistance to the war and plans to demilitarise Shannon Airport.

The swp supports another swper? Do you think they'd hang him out to dry like they did in the past with non-swp activists?

Michael, since when have the IAWM supported civil disobedience or direct action around the war? Never! You've undermined, maligned and failed to support advocates of nvcd and nvda on many occasions. Late in the day a few non-swp individuals gave tokenistic support to the Pitstop Ploughshares but as an organisation you did the bare minimum. Mary Kelly was ignored and Fintan Lane was left to rot in jail even though he was your PRO at the time.

Lets hope your comments signify a growing realisation that your behaviour held back the antiwar movement and that you must change. Words are cheap.

Solidarity to our comrades in Derry

Today's Irish Times reports that Irish soldiers and an increased number of gardai have been sent to Shannon airport to bump up security in response to Ciaron's statement after the trial. They must be kidding if they think the little detachment they've deployed will stop non-violent direct action at Shannon.

Onwards, my friends! Shut down Shannon if the US military continue to use it as a refuelling station!

Well done them people! Probably the best, and one of the few, 'victories' we've had in many years. Shows the need for a diversity of tactics that includes civil disobedience/direct action as well as marches. This one worked despite the naysayers immediately afterwards.

After what happened in Britain at the weekend, with several Trident Ploughshares arrested, it will be interesting to hear what reflections Ciaran and Deirdre have on their own case.

Don't forget the vigil/protest this coming Saturday in solidarity with the people of Lebanon and Palestine. Organised by the Cork branches of Anti-War Ireland, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the IAWM, it gathers on Daunt Square at 2pm.

Be there and show your opposition to Israeli military aggression!
