Vigil in Cork City centre draws strong public response

category cork | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Saturday July 29, 2006 18:59author by John Jefferies - Anti War Ireland, Cork Report this post to the editors

Solidarity with the people of Lebanon and Palestine

Between 40 and 50 anti-war activists held a vigil in Daunt's Square, a pedestrianised area on Cork's main street Patrick Street, today to show their solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon and opposition to Israel's slaughter of at least 600 people in the last fortnight.

The vigil was organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Cork Anti-War Alliance. It was supported by Anti-War Ireland and several other groups.

There was strong public support shown to the vigil and people queued up to sign the petition. Black Shamrock badges were worn as a mark of shame that Ireland continues to allow US military use Shannon airport while the US are providing the Israeli Defence Forces with lethal weapons and the US continues its own war of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obviously, protests at the continuing slaughter in Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine are continuing unabated. Well done, John, for capturing the day in such blustery conditions. The latest news is that Israel is refusing to stop attacking south Lebanon, therefore hampering aid attempts, and preventing civilians from leaving the war zone.
