Within spitting distance of the war-mongers lair, Brian Haw bears witness to the Ploughshares

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday July 20, 2006 14:14author by Tommy Donnellan - Cosantoiri Siochana Report this post to the editors

Outside the dunghill where Blair crows "Democracy," Brian did his duty.

Last Tuesday, two Irish anti-war activists, with Brian Haw's imprimatur joined him and crew outside the UK's Houses of Parliament to voice our outrage against the judicial obscenity that is presently being visited on the Pitstops, that moral imperative successfully completed without hassle from the machine gun toting coppers opposite.

The Irish Embassy in Grosvenor Place was next for our attentions, two other English anti-war activists, God bless 'em, were already there before us picketing and leafletting the pedestrians with good effect - and were doing so for the previous five days.

That is what Brian Haw has been for the past few years as he confronted head-on the warmongering British State forces. Ciaron and I met Brian Haw in April 2004 after we had completed the 80 kilometre peace walk from Trafalgar Square to the the nuke research facility at Aldermaston. Brian was a great inspiration and rightly received an affirmative rap during Mark Thomas's recent show in Dublin, hosted by Afri. Much appreciation to Tommy and his comrades for orgainsing this. It has been a long and tough 3 1/2 years being dragged through the courts since our Ploughshares action at Shannon Airport on Feb. 3rd '03, 5 days after Mary Kelly had disabled the same plane. Our fears then have been tragically proven true and as the warmongering spins out of control in the Middle East one can only be reminded of our continued responsibility to do our best to remain vigilant (but not a vigilante), non-violent (but not passive), resilient (but humble and with a sense of humour intact), creative (in order to maintain the initiative)............

The judge in our case will begin her charge to the jury tomorrow morning at 10.30am and will finish it on Monday July 24th at 11am in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court 23. The jury is due to be sent out before lunh on Monday and the verdict is expected on Monday evening.

Thanks again for this beautiful act of solidarity.
