news report

A small vigil in solidarity with peace campaigners standing trial today for their part singing, praying, and chanting in the entrance to the School of the Americas went very well. This was the first time (I'm told!) that there has been a vigil or protest outside the US Embassy in Ireland about the School of the Americas... though I learnt today also that the imposing fence around the embassy was erected to keep nuns and others from protesting at the steps of the building about America's involvement in the 1989 University of Central America Massacre in El Salvador. (see: http://www.soaw.org/Articles/newsletter/jesuit_massacre.htm) From 5pm until about 7.30pm there was a small group of people in front of the embassy with placards and a colourful banner (from the Latin American Solidary Centre) who gathered in solidarity with the peace campaigners on trial in America today for resisting the SOA. An Irish Times photographer kindly came and NEARfm (http://www.nearfm.ie/) will also have a short piece about the vigil and the School of the Americas during their Latin American issues programme this Saturday. Keep an eye out for future events in Ireland to do with the School of the Americas. Visit the School of the Americas Watch at the website below for further details about the trial and the SOA. |
