offsite link ?It?s Time to Scrap the Asylum System? Fri Feb 21, 2025 17:17 | Will Jones
It's been exasperating to watch as, in defiance of the wishes of Western electorates, the cultural make-up of our countries is radically transformed. It's time to scrap the asylum system, says Lionel Shriver.

Germany's 'firewall' against the AfD is set to saddle voters with the same pro-migration Leftoid Government they're desperate to get rid of. When will the Right realise the Left has them over a barrel, asks Eugyppius.

Sometimes Trump's mercantilist thinking is so radical as to be wildly, crazily brilliant, as with the Gaza Riviera plan. But on Ukraine it's letting him ? and the West ? down, says Ian Rons.

Athens burning

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday April 26, 2006 14:03author by MichaelY - iawm Report this post to the editors

Rice comes and goes

Huge anti-US demonstrations in Athens
Rice in Athens
Rice in Athens

Rice’s visit in Athens was another occasion where the feelings of Greek people clashed with the desires of the Conservative ND (New Democracy) Government to play ball with the US. Rice’s position can be summarised as:
1. I want Greece to support our position in the UN Security Council when Iran is on the agenda.
2. I want Greece to commit more troops in Afghanistan and a confirmation that US forces can use freely the Souda Airbase in Crete.
3. I want Greece to support Turkey’s entry to the EU and I would like Greece to put pressure on the Cyprus Government to go easier on the issue of the occupied part of northern Cyprus
The Greek official response through its Foreign Secretary Dora Bakoyanni: “We are involved in an EU managed diplomatic process on Iran”.
So Ms Rice came, spoke and left. She left behind a city resembling Baghdad – full of broken windows, burnt cars and smelling like a chemical production outfit with the amount of sprays and teargas used by the riot police.
As Irish members of the European Social Forum are getting ready to visit Athens for the ESF meeting in a week or so, let us conclude by quoting verbatim D.Stratoulis, one of the leaders of the Greek Social Forum: “We condemn the unprovoked use of teargas and chemical sprays by the Riot Police. The Government took the unconstitutional decision of banning our demonstration. The chaos that resulted was their doing. Police and State violence will not stop us from responding to the wars they are preparing”.

It's so easy to support molotovs, arson, helmts, clubs and anarchists sacking a city against US imperialism, of course if that violence happens closer to home you would denounce it as adventurist or call them "thatchers children".

Hey,

Please, to save Indymedia space, check my response to 'Curious' in the other relevant thread - and if you want to debate the issue lets do it seriously without constant references to unspoken and deleterious past crimes committed by horrible, insensitive and regressive individuals/ groups/ organisations.

Joke!!!!!!

As it would befit a real Situationist!

In tonight's meeting of the iawm Steering group, we discussed the issue of supporting the defendents of both the forthcoming Catholic workers trial and those arrested in Baldonnel. Not one voice of those present raised any opposition...we are going through with our diecision to support.
We are waiting for invitations to meet and discuss. Anyway, good Kermit, the same issue was raised in the Peace Alliance Co-ordination....we are going ahead.
What will you be doing? Will you be with us in our support?

The Bush establishment use of "Intelligence" is again highly questionable. Rice should contact the CIA, where she will learn that the Total Fertility Rate(TFR) in Greece is 1.34 (Replacement Rate is 2.10). It is a waste of time asking the Greeks to commit troops anywhere; if they do, they only harm themselves. Greece's population like the rest of Europe is petering out! The USA, on the principle that the flag follows the trade, will soon pull all their troops from European soil; their multinationals businesses are vacating in their droves. So you battle seeking liberals, anarchists, socialists or whatever you call yourselves get ready to defend the elderly Greeks from the youthful Turks. By the way, The TFR in the USA is a much healthier 2.09. The Grandchildren from Rice’s Country will find a great dearth of young Europeans in fifty years time. The calamity facing Europe later on this century is unseen because we choose to be blind!
