Support from the Northside!
Hey Taoiseach, Leave Poolbeg alone!
Loath as I am to rise to the bait but perhaps I was on the Protest as the only City Councillor who has opposed the plan right back to 1998 when it was first mooted and have consistently opposed it since then. Obviously my colleague Kevin Hmphreys has also opposed it since his election in 1999.
I am also loath to point out that the power of the Manager to impose an incinerator against the wishes of the elected Council stems directly from the Environment Protection Act introduced as a direct result of the activities of the anti bin tax brigade. What a legacy they have left us?
All you unfortunate Dublin residents who have Dermot-let them eat cake-Lacey as a public representative take note of his post above. He has the balls to blame the anti bin tax campaign for the government passing anti democratic Environment Protection Act!!!! This is the usual victim blaming that you would usually associate with the right wing.
Victim-blaming consists of holding victims of crimes or other misfortunes wholly or partly responsible for what has happened to them. For example: a motorist who leaves a car unlocked with the keys in the ignition may seem partly responsible if another party steals the car. Or persons who use verbal abuse may count as partly responsible if they suffer a physical assault.
The theory depends on the view that a prospective victim should know and acknowledge either human nature or other facts of life when making decisions. Thus persons may appear blame-worthy if they act recklessly or with negligence. Laws acknowledge this concept in some areas, for example when a driver ignores the rules of the road. However, victim-blaming does not simply imply that the perpetrator behaved recklessly, but that the victim should take responsibility for the criminal. This implies that the victim creates temptation which tests the perpetrator's resolve.
Anti Bin Tax protestors, in opposing an unfair double tax, are responsible for a government decision to take away the right of local councillors to make decisions, ergo, they should have known better, allowed the bin charges to be implemented unopposed. Dermot you should be a government minister, I would propose you for MINISTER OF TRUTH
John,
Pity you don't have the guts to use your real name and engage in real debate.
There is nothing in my post that I have not said before and thankfully the electorate have supported my position and re-elected me.
Yes I believe that the EP Act is a direct result of the campaign and if you are honest you might too. I will engage in any debate on this issue and as recently as two weeks ago did so in a civil and reasoned debate with Joan Collins at the Dublin Community Forum AGM. However engaging in debate with people who hide behind false names and who simply throw snide comments in the place of reasoned argument becomes tedious and eventually impossible. Of course I suspect you know that but it is all you are capable of. On the wider social and economic issues facing Dublin I have no doubt my record of delivery is well ahead of your record of internet activism.
Sorry to disappoint, Dermot but John is my real name.
Forgot to say "thanks" to Paula for posting the photos and sure John ( no surname) might actually engage in debate someday
