Shannon Referendum! & 1916

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Friday April 14, 2006 01:00author by l - peacenetwork (umbrella ) Report this post to the editors

Where's our neutrality, Bertie?

There'll be a stall on Westmoreland St .from 2-4ish this Sat. launching a referendum campaign on the military use of Irish airports.

60% said no to the military use of Irish airports. We demand a referendum. Let the people decide.
There will be fliers and posters to give out and take, on Shannon and Baldonnel, Shell to Sea and Residents Against Racism and the connection between these campaigns and the 1916 Rising and Proclamation. Come on by, pick up posters and chat about Easter Sunday - how to raise the thorny questions of the difference between the society envisaged by concepts of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, and the privatised, corporate, fully-branded Republic neutral in favour of empire.

Real democracies don't need tanks.

The procedure for amending the constitution is specified in Article 46.
Every proposal for an amendment of this Constitution shall be initiated in Dáil Éireann as a Bill, and shall upon having been passed or deemed to have been passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas, be submitted by Referendum to the decision of the people in accordance with the law for the time being in force relating to the Referendum. After being approved by referendum an amendment must be signed into law by the President. However, this is merely a formality as, provided the correct procedure has been complied with, the President cannot veto an amendment.

There is a clear democratic deficit as all amendments, up to now, have had to go through the Dail . There has been no obvious mechanism whereby the Irish people can call a referendum.
As there is no political interest , on the part of the current government in demilitarising our airports, we are at a stalemate. The most democratic solution appears to be to let the people decide. We have as long as it takes to do a referendum campaign. It can only benefit direct democracy.

BTW umbrella and network are very different things??

author by Elainepublication date Fri Apr 14, 2006 12:55author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Many times I have been caught in the rain with only a network to protect me, having forgot my umbrella. There have also been times when I found myself alone with my umbrella when a network would have served me better.

So your comment 'umbrella and network are very different things??' seems correct, on the surface.

Unless it's a 'network of umbrellas' or an 'umbrella network'.

Nobody knows...

it's a secret.
