category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Wednesday April 12, 2006 20:19author by IMC Ireland Report this post to the editors

New films from Latin America
The Gas is Not For Sale
The Gas is Not For Sale

The Gas Is Not For Sale (El Gas, No Se Vende)
By Tercer Mundo, Bolivia (Spanish with English subtitles)

On October 2003 a national rebellion took place against the government of Sanchez de Lozada. His plan to privatize the gas was met with mass resistance. He used the US supplied army against the people and over 80 died and hundreds were wounded. This video shows the rebellion from the ground floor. They use both their own footage, television footage and fine editing to show the power of workers, peasants, students and women in protesting the policies of the IMF and World Bank. The situation in Bolivia can be compared in some respects to what is currently happening in the west of Ireland with Shell in Mayo.

Paso a las Luchadoras (Open The Road to The Women Fighters)
By Ojo Obrero (2004), Argentina (Spanish with English subtitles)

Thousands of Women in Argentina have taken up the struggle for liberation by their own hand. This film focuses on seven women whose day-to-day struggle takes in all aspects of life. These Argentine women see that their oppression is created by the capitalist social system and in Argentina it is manifested by the lack of jobs, the double burden of exploitation that working women face and in the lack of freedom to govern one's own body (abortion remains illegal in Argentina.) These women look to the creation of an independent assembly of the working class as the way forward for the fight for working woman's power.

ARGENTINA VOICES (Spanish with English subtitles) - Dylan Howitt and Zoe Young

In December 2001, Argentina's economy collapsed, leading to enormous rioting and social upheaval. Argentina Voices documents the rising frustration of the dispossessed population in Argentina with their president and government. As their anger grows, they decide to protest, but are met head-on by the police, whose brutality shows no mercy for their plight.

Starts at 7pm. Admission only €5. Please support Indymedia Ireland. Thanks to SIPTU for facilitating the film nights. Full bar available afterwards.
