When bombing civilians becomes 'ethical' but heating your home doesn't, it's clear that ESG was never about ethics at all, says Ben Pile. Just power and control.

International Day of Remembrance for Hungerstriker Martin Hurson

'Be like Martin!'

July 13 Marks the day Irish Republican Hungerstriker Martin Hurson Died on Hungerstrike 25 years ago.

We are asking the youth of the world to join with Ógra Shinn Féin in commemorating this brave Irish revolutionary who died the most awful of deaths, to advance the struggle for freedom and socialism.

Having seriously deteriorated after forty days on hunger strike, he was unable to hold down water and died a horrifically agonising death after only forty-four days on hunger strike, at 4.30 a m. on Monday, July 13th 1981.

Use poster on day of remembrance

Ideas suggested are:
Youth Marches,
'Rock The Block' concerts,
White line vigils,
Candle light vigils,
Torchlight processions,
Banner drops,
Leafleting,
Postering etc,
and especially making use of the '10 reasons posters.'
Every area should be organising an event, of whatever size to mark this momentous date in this significant anniversary.

Martin would never help administer British rule in Ireland.
The Provisional Movement of today in no way resembles the Republican Movement of 25 years ago.
Be like Martin. Be a REPUBLICAN.

I wish Ógra the very best with their commemoration celebrating the life of brave hunger striker Martin Hurson (Dia go deo leis!).

I'd like to suggest an idea also considering all the events you have scheduled. It would be a very humanitarian gesture if ye could show some support for the Maghaberry political prisoners who are being detained under appalling conditions in a British Imperialist prison. A few placards (not to take from the main event of course) to highlight the plight of Irish political prisoners and all Irish citizens still suffering from British brutality. I'm sure Martin and all the other nine brave hunger strikers and Ché Guevara himself, would approve such an idea.

Beannacht Dé oraibh.

Slán anois.

On May 29th, this year, Martin joined the hunger strike, replacing South Derryman Brendan McLoughlin who was forced to drop out because of a burst stomach ulcer.

In the Free State general election in June, Martin was a candidate in Longford/Westmeath, and although missing election, obtained almost four-and-a-half thousand first preference votes, and over a thousand transfers, before being eliminated at the end of the sixth count, outlasting two Labour candidates and a Fine Gael contender.

Barely one month after election the Free State government's bolstering of Britain's barbaric intransigence led to the death of Martin Hurson, the sixth hunger striker, at that stage, to die.

How about a day of remembrance for the Protestants of Tyrone & Fermanagh who were ethnically cleansed by terrorists scumbags like Hurson?

Sure, Memory Man, of course, all Irish people of whatever colour, black, white, yellow, and religion, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, hari-krishnas, buddhists etc, yes all Irish dead who died as a result of the British occupation should be commemorated. If anyone is holding commemorations for any of the above, I would really appreciate if you could also highlight the appalling conditions political prisoners are being confined in by British imperialists in Maghaberry Gaol.

Martin Hurson suffered a terrible death and his life would have turned out very differently had the British not invaded our island in 1169 and subsequently planted it with foreigners who drove the native Irish from their homes and lands and tried to extinguish their language and religion and all signs of Gaelic culture and customs. Things would have been very peaceful here had this invasion not occurred at all.

God bless everyone in Ireland who has suffered and died due to the occupation of Ireland by British imperialist forces - rest in peace all.

Slán anois!
