Morales Turns on the Workers

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Tuesday April 04, 2006 15:08author by Permanent Revolution Report this post to the editors

It appears that 'socialist' president Evo Morales is on a collision course with socialism

A few months after being hoisted to power on the backs of a mass movement of peasants and workers Evo Morales has turned the army and police on striking airport workers.
The BBC covers the story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4864092.stm
and libcom has it at http://libcom.org/news/article.php/20060403014826748

In another development Morales has promised to use the army and police to break a threatened bus-workers strike.
That's at http://www.plenglish.com/article.asp?ID=%7BDAE6477D-C0A...ge=EN

looks like a very interesting dynamic may be developing, and Morales, if he is not careful, may end up being chucked out by mass protest just like the last two presidents have been.

If you check the links you will see that the "busworkers" are private bus owners. This is not a strike, some are self-employed individual busowners but many are employers. Effectively this is a lockout.

The Airline is seriously corrupt and many of the workers are in on the take. The State owns 48% of the company. This is a similar situation to Venezuela where Oil Company workers went on "strike".

Dont be fooled this is the Capitalists at work.

You need to be careful when commenting on things with regard to Latin America at the moment. Recently I watched an item on Channel Four news when an apologist for the landed gentry in Venezuela was interviewed with human rights activist flashing up on the screen to identify her.
